The SDWA

• The main federal law that ensures the quality
• of Americans' drinking water. 
• Originally passed by Congress in 1974
• due to congressional concerns about
• organic chemical contaminants in
• drinking water and the inefficient
• manner by which states supervised
• and monitored drinking water supplies
• The law was amended in 1984 and 1996
• and requires many actions to protect drinking
• water and its sources
• Authorizes the United States Environmental
  Protection Agency (EPA) to set national
  health-based standards for drinking water to
  protect against both naturally-occurring and
  man-made contaminants that may be found in
  drinking water.
