1
Senior Staff Conference Welcome and
Introduction Ann Tate - Rector
Committed to your future
2
The University in 2010 shape, size, mission,
partners
  • Thinking about change means changing our
    thinking.
  • Sacred cows make the best burgers.

3
Trends impacting on HE in the western world
  • Impact of technology
  • The changing nature of todays and tomorrows
    students
  • The costs of attending university
  • Increasing competition for funding government
    and non government
  • Changing university curriculum
  • Growing competition from non-university delivery
    options
  • Changing societal expectations
  • Blur

4
Characteristics of at risk institutions
  • Loss of institutional focus
  • Weak or inaccurate image
  • No planning assets
  • Diminished support from its nurturing publics
  • High operation costs compared to cohort
  • Over dependency on tuition fees/tuition increases
  • Deferred maintenance
  • Low retention rates
  • Difficulties in student recruitment
  • Inflexible, bloated and moribund curriculum
    controlled by academics

5
Some core assumptions
  • Education should be offered in terms or semesters
with little regular instruction in June, July and
    August (September?)
  • Courses should take 3 years at 120 credits per
    year
  • Colleges and universities should stand alone like
    small towns in rural areas
  • Students should have a major subject in which he
    or she concentrates
  • Staff should have a permanent contract for life
  • Staff should all combine teaching, research and
    community outreach/access activities
  • Classes should be small
  • All post-secondary education should take place in
    colleges and universities
  • Academic excellence is measured by inputs (entry
    qualifications) rather than by outcomes

6
A new blueprint for a new university
  • A student facing, learner centred institution,
    financially secure, regionally engaged,
    nationally acknowledged.
  • A 21st century student deserves a 21st century
    university.

7
On Funding Universities
  • They have invested in us what they believe we
are worth. When they believe we are worth more,
when they believe we contribute more, when they
believe we are of a higher value, they will
    invest more.
  • You do not advance these agendas by somehow
suggesting that we deserve to be funded more we
dont deserve anything. You have to earn the
respect of those that are investing in you and
you have to get them to understand that their
    investment will yield a return.
  • President of a US University

8
  • A University is what a college becomes when the
    faculty loses interest in students.
  • John Ciardi (US Poet)
