1LITERACY BY DESIGN FLUENT READER
SOFTWARELiteracy by Design Fluent Reader is
modeled and repeated oral reading software that
provides new and struggling readers with a proven
reading-improvement strategy guided repeated
oral reading, commonly known as repeated
reading. It is intended for use with students
who read in a slow, halting, word-by-word manner
but it is also recommended for any student who
doesnt automatically recognize the words in text
younger students and ESL or ELL
students.There is a Teacher program where
students are registered, given assignments and
then evaluated. The student use a
headphone/microphone to record him/herself
reading a passage a timed baseline score. Then
he/she listens to modeled reading of the same
passage. He/she then rerecords the passage and
also take a comprehension quiz. The teacher
listens to the students second recording, scores
it and makes new assignments.
- To get started, go to the R icon on your desktop
where you will find both the teacher and student
program shortcuts.
2Click on Fluent Reader Teacher
3Your username is your first initial and last
name. The password is wbe1
4To enter your students, click on Personnel and
Students
5Click on Add Student
6This is the screen you see.
7- Fill in the following fields
- First Name
- Last Name
- User Name
- (First Initial, Middle Initial, Last Name, wbe
same as Rigby Reads jcscottwbe ) - Password wbe
- Confirm Password wbe
- ID Student ID Number
- Choose Grade Level
- Click Save
It will show you your students information. At
this point, you can assign the student to your
class, or you can wait and do it at a later
point.
8To add a student to a class, choose Edit Class
Enrollment on the left side of the screen.
9 To find your class and enroll Sam Logan,
click on Woodbrook
10 Then click on Woodbrook under Course to find
your class
11 Click on your Class
12 Click Save. Then click on Home to switch
from Class Management to making Fluent Reader
assignments
13 Under the Fluent Reader tab, click on
Assignment Book
14 Check individual students, multiple students or
all of the students that you want to assign a
level to. On the left, choose Set Level/Goal
15 In the dropdown menu, choose the appropriate
level.
16Recommendation is to leave the words per minute
goal on the default. Click Save

18A student clicks on Fluent Reader Student R
desktop icon and this screen comes up. The
student clicks on the name of his/her class to
highlight it and then clicks the OK button.

21This screen comes up. The headphone/microphone
must be plugged in before a student begins by
clicking on a passage.
22Students are instructed to click on the First
Reading button and read the passage aloud for one
minute. They click on any words that are hard to
say and stop when they hear the bell, clicking on
the last word read. If they get done before the
bell sounds, there is a Finished Reading button.
23This screen comes up. Students click on Model
Reading. They listen and follow highlighted text
24They can stop any time by clicking on the stop
sign.
25They can click on the definitions button any time
to see words they have marked.
26The default for practiced reading is 3 times but
you can change this in the teacher program.
27Click on Practice Reading to read and record
again. When the bell sounds, the student should
click on the last word read.
28The student clicks on the Play button to listen
to him/herself reading.
29When the student finishes, the scores are shown
and from this screen, the student should click on
the Take Quiz button.
30The student clicks on the answer, a blue circle
appears around the letter and then the student
clicks the next button at the bottom right.
31At the end, the questions are displayed one by
one with the students answer compared to the
correct answer
32There is a done command at the bottom right of
the last question review page. When clicked,
the student has the option to select a new
passage or to log out.
33But in order for a student to work on more than
one passage in a given day, you have to change
these preferences again in the teacher program.
34Back in the teacher program, it is time to find
your student and score the reading activity,

36To evaluate the final reading the student
recorded on the computer, click Start Playing.
The program plays the recording of the students
final practice reading of the passage. As you
listen to the recording, click any errors the
student made during the reading.
37When the program tells you to, click the last
word the student read and click next.
38Rate the fluency and outcome and click save. The
program will warn you about a low comprehension
score on the quiz if you try to pass the student
and they did poorly.
39You can generate reports from the main Fluent
Reader page.

44Troubleshooting
- If the student is not able to record make sure
the microphone/headphone is plugged in securely. - Then check the computers sound settings.
45In the lower right hand corner of the desktop,
double click on the volume control to open the
Speaker box
46Click on Options, then Properties and make sure
microphone is checked.
