Blizzard Characteristics
  • Common name fluthiacet-methyl
  • Mode of Action inhibition of Protoporphyrinogen
    oxidase (PPO or PROTOX)
  • Formulation EC 0.91 lb ai/gal
  • Use rates tested in cotton 0.4 0.6 fl oz/A
  • Will have the lowest labeled use rates of any PPO
    defoliant
  • Seasonal use total not to exceed 1.25 fl oz/A
  • Requires a crop oil concentrate (COC) adjuvant to
    maximize performance
  • Not unlike other PPO defoliants
  • Rainfast in 1 hour post application

5
Field Trial Objectives
  • Evaluate Blizzard for cotton defoliation
performance compared to other PPO defoliant
products in picker and stripper types of cotton
    across the Cotton Belt.
  • Obtain performance data for Blizzard ethephon
products commonly used such as Finish 6 Pro,
    FirstPick and Prep.
  • Measure performance of Blizzard in sequential
    applications with paraquat products Firestorm
    and Gramoxone Inteon.
  • Confirm Blizzard use patterns and performance
with thidiazuron products such as Dropp 50W and
    Dropp 4SC.
  • Evaluate performance of aerial applications.

Summary
  • Blizzard 0.91EC provided effective cotton
defoliation across a number of locations and
environments and was comparable to Aim, ET and
    Resource at rates tested.
  • Ethephon products CottonQuik, FirstPick, Finish
Pro and Prep enhanced defoliation performance
    when tank mixed with Blizzard.
  • Blizzard treatments were equal to standards in
    Mid-South university trials.
  • Dropp followed by Blizzard and Dropp Blizzard
followed by Blizzard were effective defoliation
and regrowth suppressing treatments in south
    Texas.
  • Blizzard ethephon was more effective than
Resource ethephon for regrowth suppression in
    two south Texas trials.
  • Single applications of Blizzard ethephon were
equal to other PPO defoliants in leaf removal
while showing less leaf desiccation than Aim or
    ET in Georgia consultant demonstrations.
  • Blizzard ethephon followed by Blizzard and
    Firestorm (paraquat) were very effective
treatments applied by airplane to irrigated
    cotton in West Texas.
