Les centres commerciales, restaurants et societés
8
Les centres commerciales
Most of the big hypermarché grocery stores were
inside centres commerciales, which are like
malls. Instead of a clothing store being the
main store of a mall, the main stores were
grocery stores.
9
Restaurants et societés
Many of the restaurants and businesses we know in
America are also found in France, such as
McDonalds and Dominos Pizza however, no
Wal-mart exists there...

French Stereotypes Dismissed
- the French hate Americans False. All the
French people I know are kind and friendly to
everyone they meet. In fact, I think the French
in general are nicer than the Americans... And
ironically, one of my most-asked questions in
France was dont Americans hate France? -
French people dont have very good
hygiene False. In matters of hygiene, France is
just as civilized as America. - they all wear
berets and smoke pipes Again, false. Sure, some
people do, but most people wear what wed
consider to be normal clothing. - all they do
is eat French bread and drink wine Okay, this
one has some truth in it many French people like
wine, and bread is an essential part of every
meal, sometimes with chocolate or
cheese. Conclusion most of the
stereotypical images portrayed of French people
are false.

Miscellaneous
  • heretofore absent and henceforth coming
    informational elements
  • of various topical concerns

54
Food
  • French bread is served with every meal, whether
at a restaurant or at home. In the mornings some
people dip their bread in hot chocolate for
    breakfast.
  • Chocolate is incorporated into almost anything
if you walk down the cereal isle at a French
grocery store about 90 of the cereals are
    chocolate-coated, filled, or flavored.
  • They have hundreds of varieties of cheeses
(almost one per day for a year) yet the normal
American cheeses are hard to find cheddar is
rare, and French mozzarella has a different
    texture and taste.

55
Music
  • Most of the music people listen to in France is
the same as what we listen to here if you turn
on the radio, most of the songs are American
songs. There are a few French music artists,
    however.

56
AnsweringQuestions
1. Was there a lot of leisurely alcohol
consumption among minors (such as during meals,
etc.)? 2. Did you see the Tour de France? 3.
Have you seen Napoleons tomb? gt No. (all three
questions) 4. What is your favorite French
food? gt I dont know. Definitely not escargots,
nor French cheeses. The bread is good. 5. What
was the best pastry? gt Again, I know not most
of the pastries I had were pretty good... 6. Was
your area a major tourist location? gt No
however, Toulouse is the location of the
headquarters of AirBus, one of the biggest
airplane companies in the world. This brings in a
lot of workers from other countries. 7. Are the
girls really skinny? gt Id say that people in
France are about the same as in the States. 8.
What were sports clubs like at school? gt The
school had clubs, though I never joined them I
dont know anybody who did sports signed up with
external teams, the school didnt have any of its
own.
57
9. Do they have a community sports center? gt
Many towns have their own sports fields I didnt
really notice any sports centers... 10. What was
your favorite place/thing to do? gt My favorite
place to be was my home a fortress protecting me
from the foreign culture surrounding me. As for
favorite things to do, I designed web pages,
played around on Photoshop, built with Lego
bricks, and read an occasional book. 11. What
was your first opinion when you just came in
France? gt I was somewhat surprised how much
English there was but I was at the airport -
when we got to our little town 40 minutes away
such wasnt the case. (However, since English is
a major world language, almost everyone can speak
at least a little bit of it.) 12. Do you like
Florida or France better? Why? gt This almost
seems like an essay question... I think that if
France spoke English, I would definitely prefer
France. Everybody is nice to each other, it snows
occasionally, etc... 13. Ever hit someone with
French bread? gt Unfortunately, no, I do not
claim to have had opportunity for such a thing as
this aforementioned deed. )
