Title: Metadata Compilation, Including Geographic Locations, of NOAAs Scanned Historical Maps and Surveys P

1
Metadata Compilation, Including Geographic
Locations, of NOAAs Scanned Historical Maps and
Surveys Proposed Continuation of I-10 with
Modifications
2
Metadata for the Great Lakes Surveys
  • 2,500 scanned images need to be catalogued
  • Requires information contained within the title
block and minimum and maximum latitude and
    longitude values for each image

3
Rename and Index Images from NARA
  • Images represent early NOAA history and include
boundary maps, Civil War maps, charts, sketches,
instrument diagrams, 3-D bathymetric models, and
    more!
  • 6,000 scanned images need to be renamed and
catalogued, some are duplicate records in JPG and
    TIF
  • Map and chart images will be available free to
the public over the Internet at
  • http//www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov

4
Geo-referencing of NARA Images
  • A fraction of the NARA images contain geographic
    positioning information
  • Of the 6,000 scanned images, half are believed
to be maps and charts with latitude and longitude
and require the collection of geo-referencing
    information
  • Why geo-referencing?
  • To expand access and allow online searches by
    location and/or geographic place name

5
Geo-referencing of the Historical Maps and
Charts (continued)
  • Over 35,000 (and counting) maps and charts from
the late 1700s to the present
  • Images available free to the public over the
    Internet at
  • http//www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov
  • Includes some of the nation's earliest maps and
    charts, such as
  • Nautical and aeronautical charts
  • Civil War battle maps
  • Gravity and isogonic maps
  • Bathymetric and topographic maps
  • City plans, and more!

6
Why Geo-referencing?
  • Requires the collection of minimum and maximum
latitude and longitude values for each image
  • To improve online interface and enhance search
capabilities and discovery methods based on
  • Location
  • Geographic Name

7
Overall Status and Request
  • GREAT LAKES SURVEYS
  • 2,500 scans of Great Lakes Surveys are at IMC
  • Request to collect metadata, including
geo-referencing, for each image in FY09
  • NOAA ASSETS FROM NATIONAL ARCHIVES
  • 6,000 scans of NOAA assets from National
Archives need to be renamed and catalogued
  • Request to collect metadata, including
geo-referencing, for each image in FY09.
  • Many images do not have latitude/longitude
therefore, only about 50 of the images require
    geo-referencing
  • NOAA HISTORICAL MAP AND CHART COLLECTION
  • 8,000 images of online Historical Map and Chart
Collection contain errors in NOAA auto-populated
    geo-referencing fields
  • Original project (L-38), which covered
geo-locations for 10,000 images, will be
completed by IMC in FY08 with some money
    remaining
  • 300 of 8,000 images with geo-referencing errors
will be recaptured with extra FY08 funding
    under L-38.
  • 7,350 images that will be uploaded to the
online Historical Map and Chart Collection are
    missing geo-referencing information
  • Request to collect geo-referencing information
    for all scans described above.
  • RECOMMENDED FUNDING
  • Recommend funding in FY 2009 at 150 of 08
    funding to possibly complete work.
