Childhood

• Born in Romania- September 1928
• As a child, he was deeply religious and studied
  ancient, mystical Jewish texts.
• Son of Chlomo and Sarah Wiesel
• 3 sisters- Hilda and Bea, who were older and
  Tzipora, who was younger

Holocaust

• Elies family was taken from April 1944- April
  1945.
• He was placed in a French orphanage after the
  war.

After the War

• Elie went to college, became a professor, and
  wrote books about the Jewish faith
• He couldnt find the words to discuss the
  Holocaust at first.
• Many years later, he wrote about his experiences
  in Un di velt hot geshvign (And The World
  Remained Silent). It was 900 pages in Yiddish.

• It was translated into French (127 pages) and
  then into English as Night.
• In 1955, he moved to US and gained citizenship.
• He married Holocaust survivor, Marion Rose, in
  1969.
• Won The Nobel Peace Prize in 1986

• Oversaw building the US Holocaust Museum.
• Has spoken before Congress on numerous occasions
  regarding Humane Rights. (Darfur)
• Went back to Auschwitz with Oprah Winfrey and
  said it would be his last visit

• Has received numerous awards for his fight for
  human rights.
• He was attacked in April 2007 in a hotel by an
  anti-Semite who said that he wanted Wiesel to
  admit that his story was false.
• He is being tried for attempted kidnapping, elder
  abuse, among many other charges
