A dramatically improved synthesis has been
accomplished using toluene as solvent with
sublimed Zr and elevated temperatures producing
upon cooling in excellent yield by filtration
analytically pure, X-ray quality crystals. This
methodology is being extended to other metals and
pure isolated complex is available for
transmetallation.

C-N bond formation is one of the leading areas of
research in Organic Chemistry. Our ability to
make quaternary C-N bonds is still fledgling.
This newly synthesized complex is a highly
efficient catalyst for making C-N bonds for the
synthesis of pyrrolidine and piperidine rings
found in many medicinally active compounds.
Internal substitution on the alkene precursor is
tolerated producing nitrogen substituted
quaternary carbon.
