10 MySpace or Facebook
  • Do be careful what you have on your MySpace or
    Facebook page!
  • What do you want your boss or students parents
    to know about you? Only put that on your page!
  • Delete incriminating photos and comments!
  • Even if your page is private, students will find
    a way to see your page!

9 Dont Procrastinate
  • Return students tests and work as soon as
    possible.
  • Turn in grades on timeanticipate possible
    setbacks!
  • Respond in a timely manner to e-mails and written
    requests (items in your mailbox, phone messages,
    etc.).
  • Time-saving tip Go to your mailbox with a pen
    and sign/fill out what you can and turn it in
    before the leave the mailroom. This prevents a
    tall to-do stack on your desk and keeps you in
    the good graces of your colleagues who are
    counting on your reply.

8 Be polite to all. . .
  • Do your best to be friendly and professional to
    classified staff, other teachers, and the
    administration.
  • During professional development, be courteous and
    actively participate!

7 Keep an open-door policy
  • Do keep your door open when having one-on-one
    conversations with students.
  • If a student walks in to talk, quietly walk to
    the door to prop it open.
  • Avoid staying on campus by yourself late at night
    or on the weekends.

6 Show up on time
  • Do come to class before the students, ready to
    teach.
  • By contract, teachers need to be on campus 15
    minutes before the first bell.

5 Be smart about written communication
  • Do be careful about what you put in writing on
    e-mail or memos.
  • (What you intend as a joke could be taken out of
    context or misinterpreted and forwarded, or worse
    yet, published.)
  • Copy (cc or bcc) your administrators for
    potentially problematic situations you feel they
    should know about.
  • Contact parents first before bringing a situation
    to the administration.

4 Verbal communication
  • Be careful what you say to colleagues in front of
    students. The students are watching us all the
    time!
  • Avoid chronic malcontents.

3 Follow school and district rules
  • Yes, were adults. However if you dont follow
    what you expect of your students, then you are
    sending them mixed messages. Walk your talk! ?

2 Acting cool
  • We teach high schoolwere not in high school!
  • Avoid
  • Trying to be students friend.
  • Talking cool because most of the time, it just
    sounds uncool and unprofessional.

1 Dress
  • Do dress for success!
  • How you dress sets a tone in your classroom.
