Facilitating School and District STEM Reform In
Schools and Districts
  • The Centers Goal To assist schools and
districts, primarily at the high school level,
  • Improve science math teaching learning
  • Support the teaching learning of science,
    technology, engineering, mathematics in a
    real-world, integrated fashion

Research-Based Professional Development
  • Schools districts do most of their professional
development in ways not supported by research on
    professional development
  • Research-based professional development is
  • 8-10 days in length 1 or 2 days doesnt work,
but could be spread out over months
  • Conducted for professional learning communities,
    not individual teachers
  • Directly connected to what teachers are actually
    doing
  • Maintained throughout the school year

5
Facilitating Project/Problem-Based Learning (PBL)
  • PBL is more interesting to students
  • PBL connects students to the way mathematics and
science are applied in the real-world
  • With PBL, it is easy to integrate science and
    mathematics
  • PBL promotes a deeper, applications-level, types
    of learning

6
Building Supporting Professional Learning
Communities
  • What is a professional learning community?
  • A small group of teachers (3-8 teachers) working
over time to improve teaching and learning
  • Focus of work has to be on improving teaching and
    learning
  • Shared construction of learning plans tests,
    solving persistent learning problems, etc.
  • Classroom teaching learning becomes transparent
to each other within the group
  • Accountable conversations stay on focus to
    improve teaching and learning
