  • Opportunities like this were rare for women back
    then
  • Never really imagined immigrating to America

My Moms Family

Mom at 18
  • My mom never really dreamed of going to America
  • She had heard stories but was not ever really
    enthusiastic
  • Thought that she would go to nursing school and
    get a job in Kerala
  • Possibly start a family there

The Wedding Bells
  • My fathers brother-in-law set him up with my
mother. My parents families met each other at
midnight and the families agreed for marriage. My
father was eager to marry but my mom thought he
    was a show-off with his American sun-glasses.
Eventually, my mom saw the greater side of my
    dad!

America here we come!!!
  • After about 3 weeks of being a married couple my
dad left to America in 1985

    first paycheck while in America

More obstacles
  • When my siblings and I were born babysitting was
    a major problem
  • -In India, mothers wouldnt work and if they did
they would have help from relatives
  • -Didnt know who to trust with their children
  • Solution My mom would work nights and when she
got back my dad would be waiting at the bottom of
the stairs carrying my sister considering he had
to get to work and there was only one car. My dad
would hand my sister to my mom

Conclusion
  • Although my parents had to leave their
  • motherland, they felt it was the right decision
    to
  • make. It was both beneficial for them and will be
for later generations. They have overcome many
obstacles and have prospered in this country.
They have successfully raised three children and
continue to shower them with opportunities that
they would never imagine possible in
  • India.
