Title: Writing abstracts and creating cover pages

1
Writing abstracts and creating cover pages
2
Whats an abstract?
  • An abstract is a brief, comprehensive summary of
    a longer piece of writing.
  • Make your abstract accurate, objective and exact.
  • Many disciplines have online abstracts of longer
    sources.
  • Visit the Newark Campus Library website for
    examples of these.

3
Some classes require
  • you to write an abstract, either on its own or at
the beginning of a paper you have prepared in the
    APA style.

4
Steps in writing abstracts
  • Type the abstract on a separate page, using the
numeral 2 in the title-and page number line (the
    header).
  • Drop down one inch from the top of the paper and
    center the word Abstract.
  • Double-space once below this title.
  • Start your abstract, double-spacing it.

5
More steps
  • Do not indent the first line.
  • Do not exceed 120 words.
  • Do not use the first person (I) or the second
    person (you).
  • Visit the Little, Brown Handbook for examples of
    an abstract.

6
MLA versus APA
  • Typically abstracts are not written with MLA
    formatted papers. Instructors, however, may
require you to do so. Ask if there are specific
paper set-up requirements. If not, mention to the
instructor you will present yours in the APA
    format.

7
Cover page or not?
  • MLA formatted papers do not traditionally have
cover pages. Again, your instructor may request
you provide one. Again, ask for specific paper
set-up requirements. Otherwise, you can use the
    APA format.

8
Creating a cover page(APA) format
  • The title page will be numbered, but instead of
using your last name before the page number,
create a shortened version of your title instead.
  • Five spaces will exist between the last letter of
the shortened title and the numeral. Set this up
    in the Header/Footer text box.

9
APA cover page
  • The papers full title, your name, the course
title, the instructors name, and the date will
be centered horizontally, double-spaced on the
    cover page.
  • See Little, Brown for an example.
