What is communication?
  • Communication is the process of sharing
    information by using symbols to send and receive
    messages.
  • Verbal communication is spoken or written words.
  • Nonverbal communication are things like body
    language, facial expressions, eye contact,
    posture, and gestures.

Verbal Communication
  • Denotation-dictionary meaning of a word
  • Connotation-a words hidden meaning
  • Jargon-special vocabulary that is understood by a
    particular group or field
  • Slang-recently coined words, or old words used in
    new ways
  • Dialect-regional or cultural variety of language
    differing from the standard pronunciation,
    grammar, or word coice

  • Pick up the Using Effective Language handout in
    the front of the room and your textbook.
  • Find 1 other person to work with and complete the
    9 questions.

Nonverbal Communication
  • Use body language that supplements different
    things
  • Make sure your appearance is keeping with what
    you want to accomplish
  • Make sure the sound of your voice is keeping with
    your message
  • If possible, create an environment that is
    suitable for the kind of communication you want
