TEXAS PUBLIC SCHOOL NUTRITION POLICY
  • Establishes standards, along with USDA
    regulations, for food items provided through the
    food service operation AND food items made
    available to students during the school day
  • Policy standards vary by grade level (Elementary,
    Middle School and High School)

ELEMENTARY
  • Most restrictive
  • Prohibits any FMNVs at any time during school day
    (including guest speakers)
  • Prohibits any candy at any time during the school
    day
  • Prohibits any competitive foods at any time
    during the school day
  • All Food, beverages, and snack items must comply
    with the nutrition standards (next slide) and
    portion size restrictions in this policy.
  • School day is defined as beginning with the
    start of the first breakfast period until the end
    of the last instruction period of the day (last
    bell)

  • Competitive food any food or beverage not
    provided by school food service includes vending
    machines
  • Nutrition Standards Total fat must not exceed 30
    percent of calories or 3 grams per 100 calories
    saturated fat must not exceed 10 percent of
    calories or more than 1 gram per 100 calories
    sugar must not exceed more than 10 grams per
    ounce.

  • Provides for the following exceptions
  • Allows up to 3 school wide event days
    pre-approved by campus officials
  • Allows foods otherwise restricted by the policy
    at student birthday parties (be careful)
  • Allows one additional nutritious snack per day
    for students taking the TAKS test

  • Beverages other than milk- limit 6 fl oz.
  • Must not contain more than 30 grams total sugar
    per 6 fl oz. Juices must be 100 percent fruit
    and/or vegetable juice. No limit on
    non-carbonated, unflavored water. Electrolyte
    replacement beverages (sports drinks) are not
    allowed.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
  • Prohibits any FMNVs at any time during school day
    (including guest speakers)
  • Prohibits any candy at any time during the school
    day
  • Prohibits competitive foods anywhere on school
    premises from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes
    after meal periods. (includes vending machines
    turned off during that time too)
  • All Food, beverages, and snack items (includes
    TAKS testing days) must comply with the
    nutrition standards and portion size restrictions
    in this policy. (Includes all vending machines)
  • Allows one nutritious snack per day for students
    taking the TAKS test

HIGH SCHOOL
  • Prohibits FMNVs during meal periods in areas
    where school meals are served and/or consumed
  • Candy is allowed, cannot exceed 1.5 oz
  • Prohibits competitive foods during meal periods
    in areas where school meals are served and
    consumed
  • All Food, beverages, and snack items (includes
    TAKS testing days) must comply with the
    nutrition standards and portion size restrictions
    in this policy. (Includes all vending machines on
    campus)

PENALTIES
  • Failure to comply will require that the District
    refund federal reimbursements for for the week
    when the violation occurred. Also, TDA may impose
    up to three (3) weeks immediately preceding the
    violation for a total of 4 weeks.
  • Can not pay from food service funds
  • Our district wide daily federal reimbursement
    amount is about 46,000, weekly 230,000.
