2
SPS Overview

(2006)
3
Towards the LHC beam tests
  • TT40
  • 2 x 24 hours, September/October 2003
  • TI8
  • 4 x 24 hours, September 2004
  • LHC sector test (one eighth of the ring)
  • 2 weeks, April 2006
  • TI2 commissioning
  • April 2007
  • LHC commissioning
  • April onwards 2007

Main elements
  • Bending Magnets
  • dipoles
  • Focusing Magnets
  • quadrupoles
  • Closed orbit
  • Measured with pickups
  • Corrected with small dipole corrector magnets
  • Extraction
  • Bump circulating beam towards extraction point
  • Fast kicker magnet kick beam out of ring into
    extraction channel
  • Septum magnet to guide beam into transfer line

Beam bunched, lots of bunches, around 1011
particle per bunch

9
Basic accelerator physics
  • As particles speeds around the ring, it performs
transverse oscillations. These obey the Hills
    Equation.
  • The solution to Hills equation is similar to
    that of the SHM
  • This solution maybe parameterized in terms of
Twiss parameters, which allows the calculation
of beam size, trajectory correction etc. Very
important for good control of beam at extraction.

10
MAD
Optics calculations are (at CERN) usually done
with MAD. (Takes as input a description of the
accelerator or transfer line and magnet strengths
- can calculate lots of stuff.)
  • Calculated closed orbit extraction bump in SPS
  • Produced input files for the first part of TI8
  • Calculated Twiss parameters for this part of the
    line.

Summary
  • Beam to LHC from SPS at 450 GeV via TI8
  • Extraction bump, kick, septa, and then bending
    and focusing in the line.
  • Lots of instrumentation to make sure the beam is
    going in the right direction
  • Bumps and Twiss parameters calculated using MAD
  • Will be tested in extraction test which takes
    place in 3 weeks
