Moving OUT
  • After the residents last final exam they are
    out of here!
  • If an item does not fit in a
  • car or suitcase, the student will throw it
    away.
  • This encourages dumpster diving and creates a
    bigger trash mess on campus

How It Started
  • Before recycling, Hall Directors planned their
    own move-out programs with non-profits
  • Challenges to this method included the logistics
    of picking up the materials and getting things
    out of the buildings in a reasonable amount of
    time the intention was good but the execution
    was poor
  • Questions for the recycling program were How
    could all these useable items go to a good cause
    and how can dumpster diving be eliminated

Materials Recovery
  • The old program encouraged dumpster diving
  • Health and safety concerns prominent
  • Lots of good stuff that needed to be funneled in
    the right direction

Goal
  • We needed to maximize recycling and re-use
  • recovery for 22 residence halls with over
    6,000 students by
  • Recycling old phone books
  • Recycling magazines
  • Collecting items students cant take with them
    i.e. clothing, furniture, bikes, electronics,
    food etc.

Reward
  • The positive outcomes from the program were
  • Minimize trash disposal
  • Make the university look clean and tidy
  • Help supplement and sustain the local community
    through donations
  • Support our local non-profits
  • Build and develop community on and off campus

Targeted Materials

  • Electronics (computers, printers, TVs, stereos,
    alarm clocks)

Challenges
  • Program Specific Quick turnaround from hall
    closing to summer conferences in halls (sometimes
    less than 24 hours)
  • The Urban Effect very little viable storage
    space

Getting Started
  • Determine what agencies you want to work with

Recycling Efforts for Hall Closing The following
organizations will be allowed to enter all
residence halls to place boxes for donations and
to remove donated items for their organization
Salvation Army Big Brothers, Big
Sisters Community Food Bank Better World
Books World Care The above organizations will
begin placement of their bins or boxes on Friday
April 27, 2007. Banners (3 0) will be placed
by Residence Life Recycling staff in the lobby
areas of the residence halls designating the
above organization. If there is a specific
location where you want banners and boxes placed
please contact me so the banner can be placed
appropriately in your hall. When will pickups
occur Only during regular desk hours of 1000
a.m. until 900 p.m. and as noted by the above
organizations on the following page. How will
these organizations be identified Each
organization is to have some type of
identification making them recognizable to the
desk staff. This may be a shirt with the
organizations name embroidered on the shirt or
identification picture badge. No other
organizations are being supported by Residence
Life Recycling at this time and should not be
allowed access into the residence halls. How will
these organizations gain access into the
residence halls Front Desk phone numbers will be
distributed to the above mentioned organizations.
In order for the organization to place bins into
a hall or for removal of an organizations items,
the organization must call the front desk from
the house phone located outside each hall they
need to access. The desk assistant responding to
the phone call from any one of these
organizations will verify the organization at the
front door before allowing them into the hall.
Once verification has been completed the
organization will remove their items from the
hall. AT NO TIME WILL DOORS BE ALLOWED TO BE
PROPPED OPEN! No organizations will be allowed
access into any other portion of the residence
halls. If residents have large or bulky items,
these items must be brought to the designated
drop-off areas the above mentioned
organizations will not be able to assist a
resident in bringing the item to the drop-off
location. How often will each organization need
access to the residence halls Each organization
will make regular rounds of the residence halls
to ensure items being donated do not create a
safety problem in the residence halls or obstruct
any means of passage to an exit. If items begin
to accumulate causing a safety problem please
call the organization and asked them to remove
the items. If the items have not been removed by
the following morning the hall director or hall
staff may release the items to another
organization. Please make sure the organization
in question has been notified and given a
reasonable time (24 hours) to collect their
donations before asking another agency to take
them. Our concern for the safety of our
residents must remain our number one
priority. Any hall noting the accumulation of
items for an organization, are to contact the
organization at the following numbers

If you are unable to reach an organization or are
having any other problems please contact Becki
Gerrettie at 621-8224 or Debbie Hanson at
626-7671 anytime between 730 a.m. and 430
p.m. The above mentioned organizations are all
well respected, reliable and well known
organizations. It is my hope that everything
will run smoothly during this time of year.

Logistical Details
  • Negotiate pickup terms and what to do if an

  • Carpet Collection if a hall does not have
    permanent carpet, arrange an area for carpet
    collection

  • We ask our university police to increase bike
    drive-bys of the trash areas at all halls
  • We post the city ordinance for no dumpster
    diving on all trash areas and roll-offs
