Our Starting Point

• Climate Change is a central issue for Europe
  and for BMBF
• One of five pillars of the German
  Hightech-Strategy
• Coalition Treaty of October 26, 2009 (Lisbon
  Strategy, European Research Area, stronger
  engagement)

• Schavan Everyone researchers, scientists,
  business people and policy-makers must make a
  combined effort to enable the European Research
  Area, which is the only one of its kind in the
  world, to become reality. Only the commitment of
  all stakeholders can bring the ERA to life and
  lead it to success.

• Mainstreaming climate knowledge in
  decision-making
• Coping with uncertainties
• Improving climate understanding (including
  understanding of uncertainties)

• Improve climate prediction, esp. decadal
  processes(ocean status, clouds, regional
  projections)
• Set up climate services (communication,
  interpretation, custom delivery)
• Integrated modelling(climate impacts actions
  feedbacks)

Phase 1 Establishing a joint strategic framework
and defining research topics as priorities for
implementation. (Workshops and meetings)

Phase 2 Designing work plans, assigning
responsibilities / identifying partnerships
supporting each of the priority topics jointly
defining the appropriate mechanisms or
instruments for its implementation.
(Differentiated processes according to
priorities of individual member states)

synthesis. Instruments might include, but would
not exclusively be targeted towards, joint
