Title: Silly the Monster Doll

1
  • By Michaela Patterson and Nathan Romond

2
  • Blinking LEDs
  • Miller engine
  • One extra circuit
  • Lego gear train
  • Solar power
  • 20 junk points ( points gotten from using
    salvaged parts)

3
  • Blinking LED eyes (555 timer chip circuit)
  • Spinning tail (solar powered miller engine)
  • Moving head and neck (Lego gear train)

4
  • This circuit controlled our monster dolls eyes
His eyes were made from two red LEDs, which were
soldered to the 555 timer chip circuit.

5
  • Our Lego gear train moved Lemons head, back and
    forth.
  • One obstacle that we faced when building the gear
train was finding the correct amount and order of
gears to use. It took a while, but we finally
    figured it out.

6
  • Our miller engine is powered by a solar panel,
and it spins Lemons tail with a motor.
  • It took a lot of trial and error to mount the
motor inside of Lemon, but we finally got it.

7
  • In this project, we were required to have at
least 20 junk points, which were earned by using
parts that were salvaged from scrap. We

9
  • The three main problems that we had were
  • One Absences. Both partners were absent for
much of the project, and that made it difficult
to complete the project on time.
  • Two The Gear Train. The gear train took a long
time to get right. Due to the amount of weight it
was moving, it had to have a lot of torque, and
had to be very stable. This took a lot of effort
    to get correct.
  • Three Snow/Rain Days. Due to all the snow and
flooding, getting the project done at
school/study table also became difficult, and
time was a big issue with this project.

10
  • How we solved these problems was
  • One We solved the absences problem by staying
after school and working (on the presentation) at
    home.
  • Two With time, effort, and no small amount of
help from Mr. Schelle, we finally got the gear
    train to work just right.
  • Three This one was harder. Thankfully,
Mr.Schelle let our entire class have an extension
on this project, due to the off days. This gave
    us the time we needed.

11
  • During our project, we had a brief visit from an
elementary school, Cascadia, to learn about
    robots.

12
  • In the end, this project was really fun. It took
a lot of time, and there were a few kinks that
had to be worked out, but in the end, it was
really cool to build such a complex (for us, at
    least) robot.
