Title: Storing Your Information and Using the Network

Storing Your Information and Using the Network
  • Jill R. Sommer

  • Institute of Applied Linguistics

2
Storing Your Information
  • Storing information electronically takes up a lot
less physical room than hard copy
  • Having adequate computer storage is still a
    problem.
  • If you dont have enough memory, your machine
    rebels.

3
Storage Media
  • Floppy disks
  • Zip drives
  • Jump drives
  • Hard drives
  • Server (H or Grads drive)
  • Back up, back up, back up!

4
Backing up is soooo important!
  • Storage devices are used as insurance to back up
what youve saved on your hard disk in case your
computer hard disk crashes or shuts down
    unexpectedly.
  • Without backup, you might have to spend hours,
days, or even weeks to recreate your work.

5
Or else you could look like this...
6
Or like this.
7
Storing Your Information
  • While it takes discipline, its important to save
and back up your work on a regular basis.
  • Storing very important information on another
device altogether, like a removable jump drive or
the server is also a good idea in case of major
    calamity.

8
What's a hard drive?
  • One long-term memory device, called a hard drive,
    is installed in the computer.
  • A typical hard disk, which looks like a metallic
phonograph record, stores programs and files
    internally.
  • Hard disk is often used as a synonym for hard
drive, which is also the entire casing in which
    the computers memory sits.

9
Storing Your Information
  • With some computers, you can add a removable hard
drive, almost always a self-contained unit, for
    additional storage.
  • You may want to consider getting one once you
    graduate.

10
What's it worth?
  • 465 floppies 7 zip disks 1 CD-ROM 1/6 of
    one hard drive one encyclopedia
  • 1 floppy 1.4 megabytes
  • 1 zip disk 94 megabytes
  • 1 jump drive 128 megabytes
  • 1 CD ROM 650 megabytes
  • 1 hard drive 4GB or 4000 megabytes

11
Understanding the IAL LAN
  • LAN stands for Local Access Network
  • C drive means the local hard drive of the
    computer you are working on
  • The F drive is generally for removable storage
    media
  • The D drive is generally the CD-ROM drive
  • When anyone refers to "The Server," they mean the
    H drive or "Grads drive"

12
Understanding the IAL LAN
  • Anything you store on the C drive will be
    automatically deleted at night.
  • Store all files on the server (H drive)
  • Keep a copy on a removable storage medium
  • Do not send work from your removable storage
    medium!!!!!
