THE MOTTE
  • The word Motte in old French word is clod of
    earth
  • On the top of the motte there would be a stockade
    and a watch tower
  • The watch tower would be for people to look out
    for attacking troops
  • Mottes can be built from 10 feet to 100 feet

5
THE BAILEY
  • The word Bailey in old French word is enclosure
  • It is like a village which would be guard of the
    castle.

6
HOW THEY WERE BUILT
  • 1- they would make a mound, made of earth. This
    would become the Motte.
  • 2- then the wooden tower/castle would be built.
This would be on top of the Motte.
  • 3- they would then build a wall around the
    castle.
  • 4- then they would build the Bailey. The little
village, at the edge of the motte.

7
ADVANTAGES
  • The castles are made of wood
  • They are easy to build
  • Easy to repair
  • The people inside can see the outside and far away

8
DISADVANTAGES
  • Wood is a weak material
  • After time, the wood can rot away
  • Wood could be burnt away
  • A motte can collapse due to weight of castle
  • Errors in building can cause breakdown of
    structure

9
THE END
  • Motte and Bailey were just temporary castles,
and were soon taken over by Stone Keeps.
