Educational Philosophy
  • "I am a Teacher" an excerpt from Chicken Soup
for the Soul by John W. Schlatter
  • I am a Teacher. I was born the first moment that
a question leaped from the mouth of a child.
  • I have been many people in many places.
  • I am Socrates exciting the youth of Athens to
discover new ideas though the use of questions
  • I am Aesop and Hans Christian Andersen revealing
    truth through countless stories.
  • The names of those who have practiced my
profession ring like a hall of fame for humanity
    . . . Booker T. Washington, Buddha, Confucious,
Ralph Waldo Emerson, Leo Buscaglia, Moses, and
    Jesus
  • I am the most fortunate of all who labor. And who
do I have to thank for this wonderful life I am
so fortunate to experience, but you the public,
    the parents.
  • For you have done me the great honor to entrust
to me your greatest contribution to eternity,
    your children.
  • And so I have a past that is rich in memories. I
have a present that is challenging and
adventurous because I am allowed to spend my days
    with the future.
  • I am a teacher . . . and I thank God for it every
    day.

Self-reflection
  • "He who lost the child in himself is absolutely
unfit for the great work of education.
    (Rabindranath Tagore)
  • The true aim of everyone who aspires to be a
teacher should be not to impart his/her own
opinions but to kindle the minds.

Professional Goals
  • This year I had the opportunity to attend a
    seminar sponsored by the Northeastern
Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
There I observed teachers sharing ideas and
working through problems together. The main drive
of the meeting was emphasizing the NCTM
curriculum standards especially Math as Problem
Solving, Math as Communication, Math as Reasoning
and Math Connections. Because these four
standards span grades K-12, there is a lot of
attention paid to them. They had a variety of
helpful hints for all grade levels. There was a
wealth of knowledge for elementary teachers. I
suppose the reason for this is because sometimes
elementary teachers are scared of math, or have
low abilities in math and NCTM really wants math
to be fun at all levels. NPCTM seems to be doing
a good job of keeping teachers up-to-date with
materials and information. If they keep this up,
they will surely succeed in making math education
    more accessible to all students.

Service learning
  • I had some more tutoring assignments this year.
This year, I got to work with college students.
The math they were doing was at a much higher
level than the math I was tutoring last year, but
that was okay, because it gave me an opportunity
to try different things. Most of my students this
year thought that they would have more problems
than they really did. I was lucky, because
instead of purely remediating, I was able to
teach ahead and get them better prepared for
class. I found the experience overall rewarding
and might consider teaching at the college level
    sometime in the future.
