What is Koalaty Kid?

• A student centered approach to continuous
  improvement
• Applies the principles of total quality to the
  classroom and the management of schools
• Based on partnerships among schools, business
  sponsors, parents and others
• It is an approach, not a curriculum

Case Study

• Mytown Middle School has noticed a decline in
  student writing in recent years. In 1998, 92 of
  the grade 8 student scored in exemplary or pass
  categories. This past year the same measures
  included only 79. The staff wants to know why.
  Armed with class samples and scores from
  standardized tests, the staff begins.

Try Out the Improvement Theory

• After implementation, check data again to see if
  the desired change has occurred.
• If the change is somewhat successful, what else
  might you need to do?
• If the change has been fairly successful,
  standardize the change.
• If the change has not improved, or made the
  results worse, go back to root cause.

Its Called Continuous Improvement . . .

• Because it never ends!
• Go back and look at what else needs some work
  within this process.
• Check the Cause and Effect to see what other
  causes to go after.
• Check the Pareto for the next largest bar.
• Revisit your brainstormed list to see what else
  might help.
• Ask for feedback from the team as to what else
  needs to be done.
