Title: Introduction to DVD R DL DL Double Layer

1
Introduction to DVDR DLDL Double Layer
  • Worlds first recordable Double-Layer DVD Once
    thought impossible
  • 8.5 Gbyte data storage capacity
  • 4 Hours DVD quality video
  • 16 Hours VHS quality video
  • Designed for full DVD-ROM specification
    compatibility.
  • Read compatible with DVD-ROM drives
    DVD-Video players
  • Single-sided No need to turn the disc
  • 2.4X write speed initially
  • New/upgraded 8X DVDR drive required
  • Media design/manufacturing is the key technology
    enabler

History and Status
  • Co-development between Philips and MKM began
    more than 2 years ago.
  • Technology first demonstrated October 2003.
  • Media specification version 0.9 issued. Final
media specification version 1.0 expected in
April. Verbatim ver 0.9 media samples delivered
    to hardware partners and ISVs.
  • Double layer hardware from RW alliance
companies will be launched in Q2. - Sony
and Philips have made announcements for PC
drives. - DVDR DL compatible set-top video
    recorders expected second half 2004.
  • Verbatim media will be launched concurrently
with hardware in May/June. Other media
manufacturers expected to produce DVDR DL
media in the second half of 2004.

Looking Inside the Disc
6
Double Layer Recording
Writing on LO (layer 1)- Transmission above
50- Reflection 18 (DVD-ROM standard)-
Semi-transparent metal needed for reflection
L0
No cross-writing between layers
Writing on L1 (layer 2)- Only about half the
laser power available to record L1 layer-
Reflection 50 (18 total reflective!)
L1
Cross section DVDR Double Layer Disc
High power laser (25mW) needed for
recording(same as used for 8X single layer
drive)- 2.4X double layer recording speed

Key Media Design Criteria
Balance of optical reflectivity, transmission
and absorption for materials and processes
  • Dye recording layer L0 must have high
    sensitivity and low optical absorption
  • Semi transparent metal reflector R0 must have
    high reflectivity and low absorption
  • Dye layer L0 and metal reflector R0 provides
high transmission to dye layer L1
  • Thickness and control of spacer is very
    important for read/write performance.
  • Dye layer L1 must have high sensitivity so
that it can be recorded through L0/R0.

Inside Outside
  • Opposite track method (OTP) is utilized. -
Inner to outer writing on L0 - Outer to inner
    writing on L1
  • Multisession writing allowed. Disc must
    finalized for readback compatibility
  • Approximate recording time for full 8.5Gbytes
    50 minutes

Write Strategy (2)
Dual layer DVD-ROM spec requires equal amount of
data written on L0 and L1

  • Finalization time and end user experience will
depend on recording case, hardware, and software
    implementation.

2004 Sales Outlook
  • Double layer recording capability available in
DVDR data drives within Q2. DL functionality
expected to quickly become a standard feature on
    DVDR enabled data drives.
  • DVDR DL enabled video recorders expected to be
    launched in the fall.
  • Good value for professional dual layer
    software/video developers.
