Pre-history and development of youth centers in
Iceland

• Four big surveys revealed that a lot of work had
  to be done concerning Iceland's youth.
• As a result, youth centers where opened around
  the country.

Pre-history and development of youth centers in
Iceland

• The first youth center was opened 1991 in
  Reykjavík. At first it was a dance club.
• The next youth center was opened in Akureyri
  1997.
• The third one was opened in Ísafjörður 2000.
  Since then seven others have been opened.

The seven roles of youth centers

• 1) Entertainment / hang out place.
• 2) Facilities (f.ex. for bands to practice,
  radio station,
• big screen, project work etc.).
• 3) Information centre and employment agency.
• 4) Help to develop ideas and see them come real.
• 5) Art gallerys, concerts, shows etc.
• 6) Courses, introductions, meetings, slide shows
  and
• clubs.
• 7) Youth assistance (f.ex. counselling and
  psychological
• assistance).

About the youth centers

• Today there are 10 operating youth centers in
  Iceland.
• Another four are being formed, and other areas
  are considering the matter.

Coopurate nation wide

• A) The first conference for all youth centers in
  Iceland was on March 28th 2003. The next was
  24th of August 2003.
• B) Conferences of directors was on November 13th
  2003 and 5th and 6th February 2004. The next will
  be 24. april 2004.
• C) A joint project of all youth centers in
  Iceland where the organization Húsfélagið was
  founded (22th of July 2004).

Húsfélagið

• Húsfélagið is organisation for every young
  people in Iceland. It is a contact net, place for
  coopurate and for young people to make change.
• The border of Húsfélagið is built up with
  young contacts (18) from every youth center in
  Iceland. It also has its own international
  representative.
• Húsfélagið got a donation from the government
  and the Red Cross.
