Catalog vs. Index
  • Lists items (especially articles) and tells where
    they appear (in journals, newspapers, books,
    databases, etc.)
  • Companies societies create indexes libraries
    buy / lease them
  • Many indexes from which to choose
  • Indexes are often called databases in library
    jargon
  • U of M Library may OR may not have articles
    listed in indexes
  • Tells what a library has or has access to
  • Mirlyn is the catalog of the UM Library (16

  • Includes all formats (print, electronic, visual,
    sound)
  • Gives locations and call numbers, URLs or other
    addresses
