2
Critical elements of CE
  • Process Focus
  • Customer Focus
  • Product Development by Multi-Functional Teams

3
Customer focus
  • Understand customer requirements expectation
  • Constant attention to customer satisfaction
  • Rapid assessment accommodation of new priorities

4
Process focus
  • Document process capabilities metrics
  • Understanding of the value chain linkages with
    the customer supplier value chains
  • Modeling of process workflows
  • Identification control of critical process
    events parameters and
  • Relentless pursuit of improvement.

5
Assignment of teams to product development
  • Representation of all relevant life-cycle
perspectives in the product development process
from the early stages, e.g., Marketing, Research
    Development, Design, Manufacturing, Support.

6
Execution of planned strategies for team
development
  • Team performance measures
  • Team training social analytical skills and
  • Removal of organizational barriers to effective
    teamwork.

7
Training for CE Teams
  • Concepts, techniques, and tools for CE
  • The deep understanding in cooperation
    characteristics (7Cs)
  • Group problem solving techniques to develop
    helpful team behavior
  • Defining a common set of consistent goals
  • Need for innovation
  • Productivity concepts e.g., TQM

10
Accommodation of teams within the organization
  • Physical or virtual collocation
  • Career paths for members of cross-functional
    teams
  • Team recognition incentives
  • Management directive describing team
    responsibilities, authority, accountability
  • Operation of teams as strategic business units in
    organization's value chain and
  • Team culture.

11
Management systems
  • Risk (uncertainty) management
  • Aggregated project planning scheduling
  • Value-based resource allocation
  • Cost/schedule control systems
  • Technical performance monitoring

12
Mechanism for rapid product assurance
  • Adoption of standards and robust design
    principles
  • Application of computer aided design simulation
    tools and
  • Use of rapid prototyping tools.
  • Design for X

13
What is Rapid Prototyping
  • Rapid prototyping (RP) is a technology used for
building physical models and prototype parts from
    3D computer-aided design (CAD) data.
  • RP systems join together liquid, powder and sheet
materials to form complex parts. Layer by layer,
RP machines fabricate plastic, wood,  ceramic,
and metal objects based on thin horizontal cross
sections taken from a computer model.
  • Companies maintain that RP has helped them trim
weeks and even months of design and prototyping
time, while enhancing the quality of their
    products.

Design for X-ability
  • ???????(Design for manufacture)
  • ??????????????????????????????????fasteners????
  • ???????(Design for assembly)
  • Boothroyd - Dewhurst???????
  • Hitachi???????(Hitachi Assembliability Evaluation
    Method,AEM)
  • Design for reliability, service, disposal,
    quality, safety, logistics, etc.

16
Leadership of senior management
  • Leadership role model
  • Steering committee for CE issues
  • Commitment to the resolution of issues at the
    lowest level
  • Commitment to support CE throughout the
    transformation cycle and
  • Relentless pursuit of improvement.

17
Discipline
  • Doing what it takes to get the job done with
    integrity
  • Consistency common methodologies
    measurements
  • Minimizing changes late in the development cycle
  • Demanding a quality product or service
  • Fair treatment of customers, even when it costs
  • Subjugating individual interests to team
    consensus
  • Managing resources as though they were your own
    and
  • Facing reality solving problems.

18
Technology systems tools for CE
  • Shared information
  • Communication services
  • Coordination services
  • Corporate memory and
  • Integrated tools databases.

19
Virtual team
  • A distributed team whose joint knowledge and
tools are shared through data placed in a common
information base, and whose work is coordinated
by a framework of intelligent communications.

20
Computer technology - shortfalls
  • Location dependence -- non-transparency
  • Non-existent groupware for decision support
  • Diversity of formats, protocols, user interfaces,
    ...
  • Unsecured networks
  • Unfriendly systems
  • Cultural barriers
