Chapter 5

• Bank comes to evict farmers
• Some kind knew that their jobs were cruel
• Some angry- hate to be cruel
• Some hardened by jobs and mean
• The farmers would fight, but who would they fight
  against? The bank reps are the wrong targets

• The banks represent the inhuman while the farmers
  are the humans.
• Tractors violate the ground
• Drivers are goggled and muzzled symbolizes
  their perception. They do their job out of
  necessity.
• The farmers identity is tied to their land. When
  they lose their land they lose their purpose and
  identity.
• The people become helpless

Chapter 6

• Casey and Tom reach the Joad home
• Muley Graves wife and kids went to Calif.
• He is essentially a ghost.
• Demonstrates dehumanizing quality of the banks
  he has lost identity.
• Muley shares his meal I aint got no choiceif
  a fellas got somepin to eat an another fellas
  hungrywhy, the first fella aint got no choice.

• Reinforces Caseys theory people should unite
  as one spirit.
• Contrast to farmer driver feed own children
  while others go hungry.
• They must hide and sleep in a cave like animals
  further dehumanization at hands of bank.
• Tom doesnt yet understand Caseys theory.
• Sleeps under stars
• Uncomfortable while Casey Muley talk
• Turtle reappears Tom lets him go

Chapter Seven

• Car dealership dealers watch for weakness and
  take advantage
• Sell Jalopies (old, dilapidated) cars rather than
  new cars
• Cycle
• We know Joad family must go through this but they
  arent the only ones.
• Written in newsreel style
• No quotes free flowing helps to show never
  ending cycle
