History, Studies and Decline of Tigers
  • From 8 different species, 100 yrs ago, over
    100,000 tigers
  • Present, 5 tiger subspecies, which total 7000
    worldwide
  • Approx. 3200-4700, with 333 in captivity
  • Most in captivity are in India
  • Declining due to poaching, growing population and
    loss of habit
  • Endangered species in 1969

A Beautiful Creature
  • Females average 9 ft. in length and weigh
    approximately 300 pounds.
  • Males average approximately 10 ft. in length and
    weigh approximately 500 pounds.
  • Life span is probably not more than 15 years, in
    the wild.
  • In a controlled environment, maybe 16 to 18
    years, but they have been reported to live up to
    25 years.
  • According to some studies, Bengal tiger is the
    largest existing member of the cat family.

Tiger Reproduction
  • Reach sexual maturity- males 4 to 5 years,
    females, 3 to 5 years
  • Female gestation period, is 98 to 100 days
  • They usually have 2 to 4 cubs per birth
  • Out of those cubs, maybe one or two survive
  • Females have a spot on the back of the ears for
    the cubs to identify in dark areas, cause of the
    cubs blurred-eyes

Living environment
  • Lives in tropical jungle, brush, marshlands and
    tall grasses
  • They love water
  • Marks boundaries, both male and female
  • Males usually travel alone, marking his areas
    with urine, droppings and scratch marks to warn
    off trespassers

Hunting and Eating
  • Hunts at dusk and dawn
  • Stalk and pounce their prey.
  • Not able to chase long.
  • Eats up to 88 Lbs of food.
  • Diet consists of medium to large prey.
  • Pigs, deer, antelopes, and buffalo.
  • Will attack humans

  • They help balance populations by keeping prey
    populations in check
  • Tigers eat their fill, the rest become food for
    various mammals, birds and reptiles.
