  • One day my daughter Persephone was gathering
flowers in a meadow when a huge crack opened up
in the earth. Hades, the king of the dead, came
out from the underworld. He captured my daughter
and carried her off in his chariot, to his realm,
where she became his queen. I was heart broken. I
wondered the earth in search of her. In the mean
time all the crops died that I was supposed to be
taking care of and there came a harsh winter. At
length Hades was persuaded to surrender
Persephone for one half of every year, the spring
and summer seasons when flowers bloom and the
earth bears fruit once more. The half year that
Persephone spends in the Underworld as Hades'
queen coincides with winter. I can relate to
human because of this event. I have truly dealt
with grief and suffering. I am best known for
this journey to find my daughter.
