Title: Monitoring the Selway Falls renovation project for passage of spring chinook salmon and steelhead

1
Monitoring the Selway Falls renovation project
for passage of spring chinook salmon and
steelhead
  • FY 2002-2004
  • PNNL

2
Problem Statement
  • Passage of salmonids is currently impeded over
    Selway Falls
  • Monitoring of the fish tunnel is needed to ensure
that improvements to the fish tunnel do increase
passage success, and the use of energy while
    passing is minimized after improvements

3
Objectives
  • Monitor the success of fishway improvements for
    steelhead and spring chinook salmon
  • Monitor the success of fish passage before and
after the improvement of the Selway Falls Fish
    Tunnel
  • Monitor the behavior and energy use during fish
passage before and after the improvement of the
    Selway Falls Fish Tunnel
  • Provide information to fine tune the fishway and
manage it optimally by examining swimming
    behavior within the fishway

4
General Approach for monitoring the Selway Falls
renovation project
  • Implant steelhead and spring chinook salmon with
    conventional and electromyogram (EMG)
    transmitters.
  • Calibrate EMG tag output to swimming speed in a
    Blazka respirometer at streamside
  • Use multiple antenna arrays to log output from
EMG transmitter implanted fish as they ascend
    fish ladders and waterfalls.
  • Track fish tagged with conventional tranmsitters
to determine the success of passage.

Expected Products
  • Estimates of passage success for the Selway Falls
fish tunnel before and after improvement
  • Swimming behavior and energetic costs of tunnel
    passage before and after improvement
  • Information that can be used to fine tune the
    fishway for optimal passage
