  • What we currently know about Indigenous
    Mental Health Issues
  • Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
    people are twice as likely as their
    non-Indigenous counterparts to experience high
    level of anxiety and distress.
  •  Youth suicide (in the Aboriginal and Torres
    strait Islander populations) is now amongst the
    highest in the world
  • Higher rate of hospitalization for mental health
    issues than the non-Indigenous population.
  • higher morbidity and mortality rates than those
    of the non-Indigenous population.
  • The percentage of Schizophrenia and Bipolar
    Disorders appear to be the same in Aboriginal
    Non Aboriginal populations.
  • The majority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
    Islander clients with mental health issues have
    complex underlying causations.
  • A severe shortage of trained health professional.

Where to from here
  • The work that we have carried out at GPNS with
    Aboriginal clients over the past 18 months shows
    that major inroads can be made with regards to
    Indigenous Mental Health.
  • Divisions of General practice are well situated
    to make significant changes in Indigenous health
    issues if they
  • Work with Local Aboriginal Health Teams
  • Encourage placements from Universities TAFE
    Colleges
  • Improve cultural training for clinicians
