19
Definition of Resume

educational and work experience, for the
    information of possible future employers.

20
What Function Does A Resume Serve?????
  • It will convince a potential employer you are
worth conducting some form (Telephone or Face to
    Face) of an interview.
  • It informs yours audience you can perform a
    certain role for their organization.
  • The resume is your primary marketing
tool/vehicle- helps to get your foot in the door
    for meetings and interviews

21
What Function Does A Resume Serve?????

without getting too wordy and drawn out.

get it right the first time. It will take you
many drafts to make it look good and the way you
want it to communicate your skills.

24
General Notes on a Resume
  • You need to have as many people as possible
    proofread your resume for spelling/grammatical
errors, and then proofread it again. Using spell
check is simply not enough. In the current job
market, if an employer sees one mistake, they
will throw your resume in the garbage can.
    Spelling/grammatical errors are simply not
    acceptable-ever!

25
What is in a Resume?
  • A bunch of mumble jumble of words.
  • A waste of paper.
  • A waste of time for you and your audience.

26
What is in a Resume?
  • It is a chronological format of your career and
    your progression.
  • Shows what you have done, but also does
communicate what you can do in the future.
  • Demonstrates how you have grown.
  • Demonstrated how your have learned your chosen
    field.
  • Demonstrates Leadership, Teamwork, and other
skills that employers are seeking from their
    future employees.

27
Questions to you ask yourself when developing

    following questions

30
Sections of a Resume
  • There could be up to Seven Sections in a resume
  • Some of these sections can be moved up or down in
    order, but not all.
  • Name/Contact Information Section
  • Career Objective Section
  • Professional Experience Section
  • Education Section
  • Special Projects Section
  • Special Skills/Computer Skills Section
  • Awards/Affiliations /Organizations Section

31
Section 1 Name/Contact Information Section
  • Name (James P. Smith not Jamie The Dog Smith)
    Exception Bartholomew J. Jim Smith.
  • Permanent mailing address (most likely your
parents home address or a P.O. Box address)
Not your address on campus that changes every 9
    to 12 months.
  • Phone Number Most likely a cell phone. Make
sure that your voice mail message sounds
    professional.

32
Section 1 Name/Contact Information Section
  • Email address Not you fun chat email address.
    (use James.Smith_at_gmail.com not sexybeast_at_aol.com)
  • If you have a LinkedIn user account, use LinkedIn
    address also (http//www.linkedin.com/pub/fred-sal
mu/0/4a7/411). This is a good way for many
individuals to get connected in a professional
basis. Do not list your FaceBook, MySpace,
    Plaxo, or Twitter address.
  • Another suggestion, if you know or think someone
on your FaceBook, MySpace, Plaxo, or Twitter
account is or could be a professional contact,
you might want to consider connecting with them
    on LinkedIn.

33
Section 1 Name/Contact Information Section
  • Name should be a little larger, centered, and
BOLDED than the rest of the information in this
section at the top of the resume.
  • Make sure your alignments, fonts, sizes, and line
spacing are in proportionate for this section of
the resume and consistent with the entire resume.
  • George Sigma Pi
  • 12345 Sigma Pi Lane
  • Sigma Pi, MI 48022
  • Home (800) FEB-1897
  • Email GeorgeSigmaPi_at_sigmapi.org

34
Section 2 Career Objective Section
  • This section can be optional.
  • The objective section can be one sentence to a
    paragraph
  • My suggestion is to keep it sweet and simple.
  • The objective is the introductory paragraph at
the beginning of the candidates resume.
Employers scan this section to formulate a brief
    description of the candidates skills,
    background, and job goals.

35
Section 2 Career Objective Section
  • The objective can be critical in providing
employers with a brief glimpse of the candidates
job goals and qualifications as compared to the
job opening. Without a well-written objective,
the job seeker misses out on an important
component of the resume that helps to market the
candidates skills and abilities to employers.

36
Section 2 Career Objective Section
  • Make sure section is indentified as Education
to show separation of sections. Make sure
CAREER OBJECTIVE is BOLDED and UNDERLINED.
  • College/University Name should be BOLDED than the
rest of the information in this section of the
    resume.
  • Make sure your alignments, fonts, sizes, and line
spacing are in proportionate for this section of
the resume and consistent with the entire resume.
  • Career Objective
  • To obtain an entry level electrical engineering
rotational position with a fortune 200 company
with the opportunity of growth into a managerial
    level in the future.

37
Section 3 Professional Experience Section
  • This is the meat and bones of your resume.
  • This is the section that will either get you the
    interview/position or not!!!!
  • This section must be IMPECABLE!!!!
  • Your format and word usage must be displayed and
communicated in a manner where it will get you to
the next step of the process of obtaining
    employment.

38
Section 3 Professional Experience Section
  • The detail in this section must contain
information that is accurate, concise, detailed,
    and specific information.
  • NO FLUFF DO NOT LIE!!!!!!!!!!
  • Use bullet points to express yourself in this
    important section.
  • In my experience, bullet-points are the generally
    accepted format for a resume.

39
Section 3 Professional Experience Section
  • When using bullet points in your resume the
resume will read/flow much easier than when
someone writes paragraphs explaining their work
experience. In the current job market, managers
take approximately 15 seconds to look at a
resume, so I strongly recommend that you make
your resume as easy to read as possible. Managers
don't have time to read novels- they want to see
    the cliff notes!
  • This is your primary marketing tool of yourself.
  • In this section you will list specific types of
tests done, size of budgets managed,
amount/percentage of net profit earned, amount of
    money saved, etc.
  • List your job while attending school,
    internships, Co-Ops, and summer jobs.

40
Section 3 Professional Experience Section
  • The format of this section must follow a
consistent format with the rest of your resume.
  • Make sure section is indentified as Professional
Experience to show separation of sections. Make
sure PROFESIONAL EXPERIENCE is BOLDED and
    UNDERLINED.
  • PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

machinery used in landscaping projects and
unloading of trucks which included the use of

41
Section 3 Professional Experience Section
  • Employer Name should be BOLDED than the rest of
the information in this section of the resume.
  • Your duties, performance, achievements, and other
important points should be in bullet points under
    each employer
  • Make sure your alignments, fonts, sizes, and line

Donts
  • No photographs or art work
  • Do not list your family status, martial status,
where you were born, your age, if you are married
and have children, physical characteristics, the
sports or hobbies you like to play, or your
    SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER!

85
Reference Section
  • No references Have a Separate Reference List to
give to the individual or organization at a later
time. At the bottom of your resume you may
want to consider listing References furnished
    upon request
  • References could make you not get the job to
someone on the list or that specific reference
could not give you a strong reference and could
be the determining factor of not getting the
specific job. When you give your references on a
resume, it is fair game for any company or
individual to call those references up with out
you having a first interview. My suggestion is
not to give references until the company asks for
a list of references and/or makes you fill out an
application. I would also preface by saying,
When will you be contacting my references? or
What is your time frame for contacting
references? The reason that I ask is because
the individuals on my reference list are
extremely busy professionals and I want them to
make sure to set ample amount of time to conduct
the reference with their busy schedules when you
    contact them.

86
Reference Section
  • Another suggestion, make sure your references on
your reference list will give you a good
    reference.
  • Make sure to ask these professionals for
permission to be a reference for your reference
    list.
  • Suggested references, former supervisors you have
a good relationship with, former professors, and
former co-workers who worked side by side with
    you.

87
Tips
  • One page and no more than two pages long
  • Keep the resume balanced - You achieve the
greatest possible positive effect when you share
the right information in an easy-to-read format
    that looks professional!
  • Keep your email professional make a new one up.
Do not have your fun/dirty/nickname email on
    your resume.

88
Tips
  • Be truthful do not lie or it will come back to
    haunt you in the future.
  • Fonts no too big and not too small. Suggested
size is 10 to 12 point format.
  • Label your second page with the header function
in Microsoft Word with your name and page number
  • Use LinkedIn as a research tool for an individual
that you may be interviewing with. You can learn
some common information about that individual
whom you are interviewing with and use this
    information as an ice breaker.
