ASTAs Guide to the E-portfolio
  • Joseph Kaye

Programs
  • There are numerous webpage editors out there for
your use unfortunately, not all of them are
free. Here is what I recommend
  • Free
  • Netscape Composer
  • Microsoft Word
  • For Purchase
  • Microsoft FrontPage

3
Netscape Composer
  • When in Netscape Navigator, open Netscape
Composer by clicking on the Window tab and
    selecting composer.

4
Open
Open the desire page you would like to work on
off your zip disk or cdrw.
5
Save
Be sure to save any work you do before publishing!
6
Publishing
  • Select Publish as under the File tab
  • Select the Settings tab

7
Publishing Cont.
  • Site Name bsu
  • Publishing address ftp//publish.bsu.edu/web/your
    name/portfolio
  • http address http//www.bsu.edu/web/yourname/port
    folio

8
Check Your Work!
  • Now that youve updated part of your portfolio,
you must check to see if it works correctly. To
do this, go back to Netscape Navigator, or any
other browser and type in your web address.

9
Adding Images
  • When adding images to your portfolio, it is
important that you know where you saved these
files. For your portfolio, there is a directory
named images. I would suggest saving your images
    in there.
  • Another helpful tip, when you do save your
images consider saving them as .gif files. These
are a bit large in size (but not by much) than
.jpeg files, although they dont suffer from the
compression and therefore they dont look so
    blocky.

10
Insert Image
  • Click on the Insert tab then select image
  • Click on the Choose File button and locate your
    image
  • You may fill out the alternative text just incase
your image is not visible on other operating
    systems.

11
Publishing with Images
  • When publishing with images, check the include
images and other files box and type in the
directory in which you want this file to be saved
    (images/).

12
Creating Your Course Page
  • Click on the File tab and go to Open File and
    then select your courses.html file

13
Courses Page Cont.
  • The ultimate for this page is up to you. There
are many different ways you can set this up. I
recommend you use a table for this and have one
column for links to the individual class and then
one column for a description of the course. This
way is much more organized and is much easier for
    the viewer to read.

14
Example
15
Creating Tables
  • Enter the amount of rows and columns you desire
  • Next decide if you would like the borders of the
table visible enter a numerical amount where it
    says border

16
The Left Column (links)
  • In this case, we just created a type of menu that
will direct us to the specific page about our
course. Now we must create this page before we
    can complete the link.

17
Creating Individual Pages for your MUSED Courses
  • Click on the File tab and go to New and then
    select Composer Page

18
Format
  • Ultimately the format of this page and everything
else is up you, but I would still recommend using
tables to keep things nice and neat.
  • Try and keep it the same as before, one column as
your link while the other can be a description of
what is youre linking (i.e. reading logs,
    professional development, or course artifacts).

19
Example
20
Before Linking Your Reading Logs
  • When Linking your reading logs, it is best to
save each one as an .html or .htm file first. For
instance, if you used Microsoft Word to type all
your reading logs, go back and open them all up,
use the save as function and select web page as
    the document type.

21
Saving Your Reading Logs
  • When saving your logs, dont forget youll have
other reading logs for classes in the future so
I recommend making subdirectories and storing
your reading logs within. This way they wont get
confused with reading logs you may write in the
    future.

22
WSFTP
  • Once you have all your reading logs in web page
format, the next step would be for you to upload
them. To do this process, you need to have an ftp
program that will allow you do upload directly to
    your web space.
  • WSFTP has a free version for students as long
as you are a student and are only using this for
    academic purposes.

23
