TCRI Project Overview
Goals of the TCRI at IAIA

• Digitize and catalog the Yeffe Kimball
  Collection, housed at IAIA campus
• Discuss issues of visual representation, cultural
  sensitivity, reproduction, and performance and
  stereotyping
• Foster long-term intellectual dialogue between
  diverse communities

Preliminary Planning

• Familiarized selves with 2002 TCRI project in
  Santa Fe
• Viewed the following
• Re-Visioning The Tribal College Relations
  Initiative
• Interview with Chuck Daily, former IAIA Museum
  director
• IAIA promotional tapes, circa 1980s
• Reviewed scholarly works regarding Native
  American identity, cultural representation, and
  visual anthropology
• Discussed how IAIA would approach issues of
  cultural sensitivity
• Researched appropriate software and hardware for
  databasing historical photographic collections
• Planned cultural activities in and around Santa Fe

History of the Yeffe Kimball Collection

• Donated by Yeffe Kimball, a noted Osage artist,
  to the IAIA in 1974
• Consists of 4,386 images in the form of unmounted
  slides, various types of mounted slides,
  stereoscopic slides
• Donated with the intention of student use

Technical Work

• Scan individual cardboard-mounted slides,
  unmounted slides, and stereoscopic slides
• Observe archival procedures regarding
  conservation of photographic images
• Scan on Epson Perfection 4490 at 1200 dpi, 24-bit
  color, with no filters or enhancements
• Save images to archival-quality CD-Rs, store in
  acid-free binder sleeves
• Database images using Excel Spreadsheet with the
  following fields
