  • Gap size influences light level and temperature
    and humidity of air and soil
  • However, climatic difference in a gap is not size
    per se, but related to the architecture and
    arrangement of surrounding vegetation
  • Distribution (temporal spatial) of solar
    radiation is influenced by forest architecture
    and tree canopies

  • THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE RESPONSE OF A
    DIPTEROCARP SPECIES, HOPEA ODORATA (MERAWAN SIPUT
    JANTAN), TO CANOPY OPENING IN TWO CONTRASTING
    FOREST SITES IN PENINSULAR MALAYSIA.

  • SEMI-DECIDUOUS FOREST, MONSOON TYPED CLIMATE,
    3-4 MONTHS DRY PERIOD (JAN-MARCH), AV. RAINFALL
    1611 mm/y.

  • TEKAM FOREST RESERVE (4º 15 N 102º 37 E),
    JENGKA, PAHANG
  • EVERGREEN LOWLAND DIPTEROCARP FOREST
  • HUMID TROPICAL CLIMATE WITH 2454.0 mm/y
    RAINFALL, WITHOUT A MARKED DRY PERIOD.

  • SEEDS WERE COLLECTED FROM TREES IN KEDAH. THE
    SEEDLINGS WERE RAISED FOR FOUR MONTHS IN FRIM

    GAVE BETTER PERFORMANCE IN HIGH LIGHT CONDITIONS
  • THIS SPECIES TOLERATED SHADE AND CAN SURVIVED
    UNDER HEAVY SHADE

  • IT SHOWED A DUALISM NATURE HIGHLY ADAPTABLE TO
    LIGHT ENVIRONMENT
  • ELABORATED ECOPHYSIOLOGICAL STUDY OF THIS
    POTENTIAL SPECIES IS NEEDED
