  • Outline
  • Introduction
  • Farming families and family farms remain a policy
    focus in Canada.
  • The Canadian Agriculture-Population Linkage
database is a unique database that assembles
  • the characteristics of the agricultural holding
(from the Census of Agriculture questionnaire)
    and
  • the characteristics of each member of the
household of each operator of an agricultural
holding (from the Census of Population
    questionnaire).
  • In this paper, we have pursued selected topics to
illustrate the utility of this database.

Socio-economic dimensions
  • Summary
  • During the 1990s, 20 of the earnings of all
    census-farm operator households (CFOH) were
received as unincorporated net farm income.
  • CFOH members may receive agric. earnings as
    wages or dividends.
  • During the 1990s, estimated agric. labour and
capital earnings was about 30 of total
    household earnings.
  • This is most important for CFOH associated with
    larger ag. holdings.
  • The distrib. of agric. holdings, according to
the capacity to provide a net farm inc. above the
low inc. cut-off, has not changed suggesting
little change in the demand for CFOH to find
    other sources of earnings.
  • Est. agric. labour and capital earnings, as a
of total hshld. earnings, has declined for CFOH
associated with each size of agric. holding.
  • A typology of farmers cross-tab. with a
typology of farms shows no one-to-one mapping
of operators as farmers and holdings as farms
  • Within CFOH, more women are measured in the
labour force and most are working in non-farm
    occupations.
  • Males in CFOH shifted (a bit) from a farm to a
    non-farm occupation.
  • Institutions providing agric.-related post-sec.
educ. have reached 15 to 42 (depending upon the
prov.) of the younger operators of viable farms.
