Welcome to Second Grade!
  • I will introduce you to Second Grade and our
    classroom.
  • If you have any questions during my presentation,
    please ask.

All About Me
  • My background
  • I grew up in Chicago.
  • I attended Illinois State University and
    graduated in 1975.
  • I received my Masters Degree in Education
  • My experience
  • Ive been teaching for 26 years.
  • I have also taught first grade, and kindergarten.

My Goals
  • To give your child the academic and social skills
    they need to progress to third grade.
  • To provide a supportive and fun classroom
    environment.
  • To help them make new friends and discover new
    interests.

Class Subjects
  • The subjects we cover during second grade are
  • Reading and Writing

Reading
  • We use a reading series that ties reading,
    writing and spelling together. There is a strong
    phonics base to this program. There are six
    themes that allow for integration of our featured
    authors, as well as some of the literature in our
    grade level collection.

Reading Additions
  • We will be supporting our reading program with
    additional supports.
  • We will be monitoring childrens reading by
    using a computer reading program called SRI and
    incorporating Reading Counts to help children
    select appropriate reading level books for their
    enjoyment.

Writing
  • Our goal is for the student to progress with
    basic sentence structure and punctuation
    appropriate for their levels moving on to
    paragraph writing and a variety of writing.

  • We will explore

  • Addition and Subtraction to 18

  • Time
  • Geometry

Science
  • We will be doing units of study this year with
    our new science textbooks. Our first unit is Life
    Science.

Social Studies
  • We have a Social Studies program called History
    Alive! which is interactive and integrates other
    areas of the curriculum.

Music and Art
  • The children have music with the music teacher
    twice a week, Wednesday and Friday. Art is on
    Monday.
  • Physical Education is with a teacher three times
    a week.(W,Th,F,)

Classroom Community
  • Our classroom is a community. In our community,
    we have rules to help us get along with each
    other.
  • Our class rules are
  • Be respectful and responsible.
  • Be organized and follow directions.
  • Be on time.
  • Be prepared.

Homework
  • I will assign about 45 minutes of homework every
    week. This includes 20 minutes of daily reading.
    Each week we will be required to write sentences
    that go along with our weekly spelling words. A
    packet goes home on Monday with worksheets.
  • Your homework packet and spelling sentences are
    due on Thursday morning.
  • Spelling Tests are Thursday.

Work Folders
  • Your child has a red Take Home Folder which comes
    home on Friday with papers from the week. Please
    go over the papers with your child, empty the
    folder and sign it on the appropriate date. Your
    child then returns the empty folder to school on
    Monday.

Tardiness
  • School starts at 900 A.M. after our morning
    assembly.
  • If a student is not in the classroom by the time
    the second bell rings, please have them check in
    at the school office before coming to class.

Field Trips
  • We have some fun field trips planned for this
    year!
  • We will attend the Nutcracker Ballet at ISU in
    December.
  • We will go to Decatur in May.
  • All field trip information will come home prior
    to the trip with all necessary information.

  • Butterfly Science Program Sept.27
  • Picture Day Sept. 26
  • Pet Show and Tell October 12
  • Nutcracker Ballet Dec. 7
