• Questioning is the strategy that propels readers
  forward.

But Why???

• As we might know, young children are full of
  questions.
• Sadly, by fifth grade, questions almost
  disappear.
• Schools tend to not foster questions.
• Lets change this!

• Enhance understanding
• Find answers
• Solve problems
• Find specific information

• Acquire a body of information
• Discover new information
• Propel research efforts
• Clarify confusion

Asking Questions Allows Readers to

• Clarify meaning
• Make predictions
• Determine an authors style, content, or format
• Locate a specific answer in the text
• Focus their attention on important components of
  the text
• Recognize that other readers questions may
  inspire new questions

Asking Questions allows writers to

• Compose in a way that leads readers to form
  questions.
• Monitor progress by asking questions about
  writing choices.
• Ask questions of other writers to confirm their
  choices and revise.
• See places for revision in their texts as well as
  those they are editing for others.

• Check for understanding before, during and after
  doing a math problem.
• Test hypotheses, conjectures, and answers by
  using different approaches to problem solving.

• Questions others to understand different methods
  and to clarify their own thinking.
• Extend their own thinking by asking themselves
  questions for which they dont have answers.
