Title: Strategies That Work: Questioning

1
Strategies That WorkQuestioning
  • Questioning is the strategy that propels readers
    forward.

2
But Why???
  • As we might know, young children are full of
    questions.
  • Sadly, by fifth grade, questions almost
    disappear.
  • Schools tend to not foster questions.
  • Lets change this!

3
Questions Help Us To
  • Construct meaning
  • Enhance understanding
  • Find answers
  • Solve problems
  • Find specific information
  • Acquire a body of information
  • Discover new information
  • Propel research efforts
  • Clarify confusion

4
Asking Questions Allows Readers to
  • Clarify meaning
  • Make predictions
  • Determine an authors style, content, or format
  • Locate a specific answer in the text
  • Focus their attention on important components of
    the text
  • Recognize that other readers questions may
    inspire new questions

5
Asking Questions allows writers to
  • Compose in a way that leads readers to form
    questions.
  • Monitor progress by asking questions about
    writing choices.
  • Ask questions of other writers to confirm their
    choices and revise.
  • See places for revision in their texts as well as
those they are editing for others.

6
Asking Questions Allows Mathematicians to
  • Check for understanding before, during and after
    doing a math problem.
  • Test hypotheses, conjectures, and answers by
using different approaches to problem solving.
  • Questions others to understand different methods
and to clarify their own thinking.
  • Extend their own thinking by asking themselves
questions for which they dont have answers.

7
Asking Questions Allows Researchers To
  • Narrow a search and find a topic
  • Clarify meaning and purpose
  • Evaluate their work by considering
  • What are the most effective resources?
  • How do I access them?
  • Do I have enough info?
  • Have I used a variety of sources?
  • What more do I need?
  • Does it make sense?
  • Have I told enough?
  • Is it interesting and original thinking?
  • Does my writing have voice?

8
Questioning
  • Now that you know what questions can allow us to
do as thinkers, lets see how we can implement
    questions into your classroom.
  • Happy Questioning!
