Where the Red Fern Grows written by Wilson Rawls
  • Book Review
  • by
  • Joey Huston

2
Characters
  • Billy (10 years old)
  • Family (grandpa, parents, sisters)
  • Ol Dan (Old Dan)-very brave
  • Lil Ann (Little Ann)- very smart
  • Pritchard brothers

3
Setting
  • Ozark Mountains during the Great Depression
  • Billys house on the farm
  • Woods

4
Events
  • Billy earns enough money to buy two coon hounds.
  • He trains them to hunt, and he becomes best
    friends with them.
  • The dogs become very good at treeing coons, and
he makes money from the hides.

5
Plot
  • The plot of this book consists of adventure after
adventure, each one a little more dangerous than
the last. To survive each adventure, Billy and
his dogs have to be increasingly determined.
  • Rawls shows the strong love that develops between
the boy and his dogs, and supporting Billy's love
is his parents' love for him. There is a chain of
love linking all the characters in this book.

6
Favorite Part
  • My favorite part of this book is when Billy goes
into town to buy the pups. He is so proud, and
even when people in town pick on him, he stands
    up for himself.
