Preview
  • What is a Disaster
  • Steps of Disaster Recovery

3
What is a Disaster
  • Any Non-Planned Loss of Business Systems or Data
  • Accidental Data Destruction by User
  • Loss of Systems to Natural Disasters
  • Flood
  • Earthquake
  • Fire
  • System Hardware Failure
  • Hard Disks

4
Step One
  • Know what data your company needs to maintain
    day-to-day operations
  • Ask users what they need
  • Databases
  • Shared Network Drives
  • Web Servers (E-Commerce)

5
Step Two
  • What types of Data Backup work best in your
    Companies Environment.
  • Hardware
  • Software
  • In-House System
  • Third Party System

6
Hardware
  • Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks(RAID)
  • Level 0 Provides data striping (spreading out
blocks of each file across multiple disks) but no
redundancy. This improves performance but does
    not deliver fault tolerance.
  • Level 1 Provides disk mirroring A technique in
which data is written to two duplicate disks
    simultaneously.
  • Level 3 Same as Level 0, but also reserves one
dedicated disk for error correction data. It
provides good performance and some level of fault
    tolerance.
  • Level 5 Provides data striping at the byte level
and also stripe error correction information.
This results in excellent performance and good
    fault tolerance.
  • Problem With RAID IF RAID CONTROLLER FAILS ALL
    DATA IS LOST!!

7
Software
  • Using Software to Backup
  • Backing Up to Tapes or CDs or to Other Network
    Resources
  • Full Copies all Data on a regular basis
  • Incremental Copies only what has been changed
since last time back-up was run
  • Hot Backup
  • Real-time backup to a different location
  • Note Back-Ups must be done at a time that they
    dont disrupt User Operations

8
In-House System
  • Back-Ups and Data Recovery done by Company
    Employees
  • Must have Proper Hardware in Place
  • Data to be back up needs to be completely defined
  • Recoveries Not Done Consistently may lead to
information loss when Recovery is needed

9
Third Party System
  • Hiring a Outside source to handle Data Back-Up
    and Recovery
  • They do the Back-Up analysis to make sure all
    needed data is backed up
  • Proficient when Recovery Process is needed

10
Step Three
  • Recovery Process
  • Data Recovery Off of Back-ups
  • Questions that Arise?
  • Did the back-ups contain the Data needed for Day
    to Day Operations?
  • When was the last Back-up done?

11
Companies Dealing in Disaster Recovery
  • Major Server Manufacturers have back-up
    contingency plans such as
  • IBM
  • Compaq
  • Online Companies that offer Offsite Storage
    Capabilities
  • GlobalDataVault.com

12
Hardware Recovery
  • If no Disaster Recovery Plan was in place, some
companies can try and save data from Hard Drives
  • Drivesavers.com
  • an industry-leading success rate of 90 to
    business, government and individual clients.
  • Saves Hard Drives damage
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Crushed

  • Companies Dealing in Disaster Recovery

14
Questions
