Ayers Rock - History

• Ayers Rock (also known as Uluru or The Rock) is a
  large rock formation in central Australia.
• Ernest Giles an explorer who discovered the rock
  in 1872 described it as "the remarkable pebble".
• Ayers Rock was named for the Premier of South
  Australia at the time, Sir Henry Ayers.

Geography

• Ayers Rock is about 318m high and 8km around.
• The rock also extends 2.5km into the earth.
• It is made up of arkose (course-grained
  sandstone) which is mostly Feldspar.
• Ayers Rock can change color, from blue, violet to
  red. Depending on the atmospheric conditions and
  the time of day.

Location

• Ayers Rock (Ulura) is located in the centre of
  Australia's Northern Territory, in Uluru-Kata
  Tjuta National Park.

Mythical History

• Aboriginal people believe that the rock is
  hollow beneath the ground and there is an energy
  source called the Tjukurpa, which means
  Dreamtime. There are many paintings in several
  caves that represent this, thousands of years
  old. Some areas of the rock are sacred and are
  clearly marked, so the Anangu people request that
  people do not take pictures or enter these areas.

• Visitors can take the tough 1.6km hike to the top
• You can get an aboriginal guide and learn about
  the legends and the Uluru People
• There are resorts and hotels very near Ayers Rock
