Nationwide Labor Quality Index
19
Purpose
  • Often, combined information tends to average
and make locations look more alike. This index
measures four variables and combines them into an
index that differentiates each location. The
intent of this is measure the quality of labor
available for the buying dollar. In other words,
for the same wage a location with a higher index
will provide higher quality labor than a location
    with a lower index.

20
Index Composition
  • The index is composed of four elements.
  • The four variables are
  • Unemployment (percentage)
  • Educational Attainment ( bachelors degree
  • high school graduates)
  • Unionization (measured by number of unions
  • present in each county from a list of seventeen
  • primary unions)
  • Compensation (average hourly compensation for
  • all employed persons)
