Title: Disk Management

Disk Management
  • Lab Sheet 7

2
Storage Types
  • Win2000 supports 2 types of disk storage
  • Basic storage
  • Dynamic storage
  • A physical disk must be either basic OR dynamic.

3
Basic Storage
  • Tradition Industrial standard.
  • Basic Disk
  • Initialized for Basic Storage.
  • Division of hard disk into partitions.
  • Contains Primary, Extended partitions and Logical
    drives.
  • All Windows OS support Basic storage.

4

Dynamic Storage
  • Win2000 and Win XP Professional supports Dynamic
    storage.
  • Dynamic Disk
  • Initialized for Dynamic Storage.
  • Divided into Volumes.
  • Volume
  • Fixed amount of storage on a disk.
  • Can be formatted with a file system and assign a
    drive letter.

7
Dynamic Disk - Volume
  • A Disk can contain more than one volume.

8
Dynamic Disk - Volume
  • A volume can span more than one disk.

9
Dynamic Disk Volume Types
  • Simple Volume
  • Spanned Volume
  • Mirrored Volume
  • Striped Volume
  • RAID-5 Volume

10
Simple Volume
  • Uses free space from a single disk.

11
Spanned Volume
  • Made from disk space that is linked together from
    multiple disks (max 32).
  • Cannot be mirrored.

12
Mirrored Volume
  • Fault tolerance volume whose data is duplicated
    on two physical disks.
  • Mirrored volume cannot be extended.

13
Stripped Volume
  • Data is interleaved across two or more physical
    disks.
  • Cannot be extended or mirrored.
  • Can we create a mirrored volume in Win2000
    Professional?

14
RAID 5 Volume
  • Fault tolerance volume whose data is striped
across an array of 3 or more disks.
  • Data on a failed disk can be recreated from the
    information on the remaining disks.
  • Cannot be extended or mirrored.
  • Can we create RAID 5 volume in Win2000
    Professional?

15
RAID 5 Volume
16
Limitations of Dynamic Volumes
  • Win2000 installation only recognizes Basic
volumes and Dynamic volumes upgraded from Basic
    volumes.
  • Cannot span volume when the volume (boot volume)
    contains Win2000 files.
  • Win2000 can only be installed on Simple and
Mirrored Volumes on a dynamic disk.

17
Data Redundancy
  • Mirrored Volume
  • Better overall read and write performance than
    RAID-5 volume.
  • No loss in performance when a member of the
    mirrored volume fails.
  • More expensive.
  • E.g one 10GB disk to backup 10GB disk of data.

18
Data Redundancy
  • RAID-5 Volume
  • Better read performance than mirrored volume.
  • Read and write performance drops when one of the
    disk members failed.
  • Good for applications that require redundancy and
    primarily read-oriented.
  • Cheaper than mirrored volume. Requires one
    additional disks for one volume.
  • E.g. Use three 10GB disk to backup 20GB volume.

19
Limitations of Dynamic Disks
  • Not supported on laptops.

20
Objectives
  • Upgrade a Basic disk to Dynamic disk.
  • Extend a volume.
  • Placing a volume under a folder.

21
Tools, Equipment and Materials
  • PC installed with Windows 2000 Professional
    Operating System.
