6Objectives RAS/6/048
- To improve the knowledge and skill of radiation
oncologists and medical physicists in 3D
conformal radiotherapy for the predominant
cancers in the RCA region by implementing
relevant IAEA documents. - Expected impacts
- These activities will contribute to improvement
of knowledge and skill of clinical practice of
the high-precision 3D radiotherapy for
predominant cancers in the RCA region. - These activities will improve quality assurance
for medical service and will improve survival
rate of the patient. - Hence, the 3D radiotherapy increasingly
contributes cancer patients and contributes
improved health care in the RCA countries.

and breast. - 2 external lecturers (Dr. KW Fong, Dr. J Wee
SIN) - 21 participants from 9 Member States.
13Regional Training Courses RAS/6/048In 2008
- 3 RTC on 3D Conformal Radiotherapy and QA -
(for Medical Physicists) - 15-19 September 2008, Singapore
- (National Cancer Center)
- Purpose To teach the main medical physics
features needed for safe and effective
implementation of 3D conformal radiotherapy. - One external lecturer (Dr. KY Cheung - China)
- 12 participants from 7 Member States.
14Regional Training Courses RAS/6/048In 2008
- 4 RTC on 3D Conformal Radiotherapy QA for
Imaging and Treatment (with focus on
gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and cervix
cancer) - 24-28 November 2008, India
- (Tata Memorial Hospital)
- Purpose To provide RCA Member States training on
QA and QC practices and procedures of 3D
conformal radiation therapy in gastrointestinal,
genitourinary, and cervix cancers. - 17 participants from 7 Member States.
15Progress RAS/6/048
- Bangladesh
- - One National Workshop on 3D Conformal
Radiotherapy was held in the National Institute
of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH), on 16
June, 2008. - - A one-day long seminar on IMRT and IGRT was
conducted in NICRH on 24th December 2008 to
prepare for technical cooperation project on
implementation of 3DCRT and to assist smooth
implementation of RCA activities in Bangladesh. - - A Technical Cooperation (TC) project on
Assistance in establishment of 3D Conformal
Radiotherapy for cancer control in Bangladesh
has been accepted by IAEA and currently under
preparation by the National Project Team.
16Progress RAS/6/048
- China
- - In cooperation with European Society for
Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO), the
National Project Team of China has organized a
meeting of 3D radiotherapy on 24-28 April, 2008
in Beijing with more than 400 participants from
120 radiation oncology centers. The meeting
covered the 3D conformal radiotherapy in gastric
cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, esophageal
cancer, cervical cancer, rectal cancer, head and
neck cancer. - - Another meeting on rectal cancer is currently
under preparation to be held in October, 2009.
17Progress RAS/6/048
- Indonesia
- - The RTC participants were from different
radiation oncology centers which are either
currently practicing or in the process of
implementing 3D conformal radiotherapy (3DRT).
The participants have shared their knowledge with
the staff of their respective centers to improve
the daily practice of 3DRT or to implement 3DRT
into their daily practice. - - The National Project Team is currently
designing the National Training Course.
18Progress RAS/6/048
- Singapore
- - Singapore has organized the RTC 2008-2 which
had 12 participants (1 from China, 2 from India,
2 from Pakistan, 1 from Philippines, 2 from
Thailand, and 2 from Vietnam). The RTC was
well-received and benefited all the participants.
19Progress RAS/6/048
- Vietnam
- - The National Workshop on 3D Conformal RT for
radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and
radiation therapy technologists was held in the
Q4 of 2008. - - 3D Conformal RT is routinely being applied
for head and neck cancer and breast cancer in NCI
Oncology Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi
Ming City. - - In an effort to improve the QA/QC of 3D
Conformal RT, Vietnam Association of Medical
Physics was established in November of 2008. - - Excessive number of cancer patients and lack
of radiotherapy machines simulators, dosimetry
systems, and QA tools are constraints of
successful implementation of the project.
20Plan in 2009 RAS/6/048
- National Training Courses are to be held in the
Member States by the National Project Teams. - CD-ROMs of the training materials used in the
RTCs were provided to the participants to be used
in the National Training Courses - Final Progress Assessment Meeting is scheduled at
the end of 2009.
21Issues RAS/6/048
- Progress Reports have been submitted only by the
Members States mentioned in this presentation.
Other MS have NOT submitted their Progress
Reports. - Close communication with the NPCs is essential
for the implementation of National Training
Courses. - Administrative and financial assistance from
National Representatives to NPT to hold NTC is
requested.
