Title: Network Identification

1
Network Identification
  • BICS 565

2
Users and Computers
  • Users have a user ID and a Password
  • Computers in a Windows network have NetBIOS names
  • 15 characters with a 16th hidden character for
    service identification
  • Pure Windows 2000 networks do not need to use
this. They use a scheme similar to DNS

3
DNS in Win2K
  • A Windows domain acts like an Internet domain.
  • It works with a DNS to identify computers on a
    network
  • Zones are used to identify groups of computers in
    a logical format or setup

4
Zones
  • Active Directory (AD) Integrated Zones all host
and TCP/IP information integrated with AD.
  • Standard Primary Zone also known as the master
zone, this is a repository for all original
information (similar to PDC in NT4)
  • Standard Secondary Zone stores a copy of the
master zone (similar to BDC in NT4)

5
Start of Authority (SOA)
  • Serial Numbers
  • Refresh, Retry and Expire Intervals
  • Minimum TTL
  • Lookup Zones
  • Zone Transfers
  • full
  • incremental

6
WINS
  • Windows Internet Name Service
  • WINS is to NetBIOS what DNS is to TCP/IP
