Title: SEMESTER PROCEDURES

1
SEMESTER PROCEDURES
  • BEGINNING THERAPY

2
  • 1. Read the client file
  • 2. If there is no client file, its gonna be a
    long interview!
  • 3. Prepare interview questions for the first
session. Get a babysitter if needed.

3
  • 4. If the person has been here before, just
review basics (I understand from the file
    that)
  • 5. Ask if anything has changed (e.g., an adult
has changed jobs a childs teeth have fallen out)

4
  • 6. Meet with your supervisor to decide on which
    tests to giveprepare for assessment
  • 7. Give the tests
  • 8. Score them and get results

5
  • 9. Based on these results, create tentative goals
and objectives for the semester. Let your Speech
    I Bible help you!
  • 10. Bring these to your supervisor and get her
    feedback.
  • 11. Based on her feedback, write the Initial Case
    Report

6
Note
  • In assessment, always have more to do than you
think you can accomplish. Trust me, there is
NOTHING worse than having too much time left
    over!
  • Remembermany clients are anxious to cut to the
    chase and begin therapy ASAP.
  • If a client is questioning you, bring in the
supervisor. Thats what were here for!

7
My personal view on testing children
  • Be friendly, but start testing immediately. Many
beginning clinicians want to spend a bunch of
time playing first to warm the child up.
  • Problem After this, they may get restless and
not want to cooperateand you have nothing.

8
What I say
  • Kamber, Im glad youre here! We are going to
start by looking at some pictures and doing some
talking. If you can tell me what all these
pictures are, we will play a game afterwards.
  • If kids talk about off-topic things during the
assessment, keep moving. Say You know, when we
are all done with these pictures, Id love to
    hear more!

9
For adults
  • What would you like to accomplish this semester?
    What are your goals?

10
For children
  • Be firmly in charge!
  • Have prizes/stickers from the very first session.
You may need bribes to keep them going.
  • If you can finish telling me what all these
pictures are, then you get to look in my special
    prize box.

SURVIVING YOUR FIRST SEMESTER OF GRAD SCHOOL
  • This semester will probably be one of the most
    stressful times of your life
  • Having clinic is verrrrry different than just
    studying for classes
  • Each day, clients are waiting for youthere is no
    procrastinating!
  • This is a huge adjustment for most people

12
Remember
  • In undergrad classes, you are focused on getting
    as many As as possible
  • In grad school, clinic is your priority
  • It is OK to get Bs in your classes! Shock!

13
As an undergrad
  • You got on the good side of your professors so
you could get letters of recommendation for grad
    school
  • In grad school, the most important people to buy
chocolates for and give cards to on holidays are
    your clinical instructors

14
When you are applying for jobs at the end of your
Masters programme.
  • Employers dont care about your GPA or what your
    professors think of you
  • They care tremendously what your clinical
    instructors think
  • Treat your clinical instructors like royalty ?

15
Also
  • Be nice to supply room workers and support staff
    such as David and Annette
  • When students are rude to these folks, we hear
about it and the rude students are discussed
openly in faculty meeting with everyone present ?
  • We have ways of finding out about this stuff!

16
Dont be afraid to lean on your friends for
support
  • One thing I took for granted in grad school was
    all my wonderful friends
  • It was a shock to get out into the real world and
be the only SLP at my school
  • Help each other along the way

17
Try your best
  • To get enough sleep and exercise (right)
  • Even a 10-minute walk can clear your head
    amazingly
  • Try to eat nutritiously (sure). I like protein
    barsquick, portable, and convenient

18
Remember
  • That no one will ever be able to take your
    Masters degree away from you
  • You will have it forever!
  • There really is life after grad school!
  • You can do it! And your professors and clinical
instructors are here to support you along the way.
