  • Seasons Greetings to all!

3
Toy DriveYour generosity of toys will benefit
UCSD's burn, emergency room, cancer, and
adolescent health pediatric units and Kaiser
Permanente's pediatrics unit.
4
Most of the children who are patients are
seriously, chronically, or terminally ill. The
children have cancer, cystic fibrosis, kidney
failure, and a multitude of other diseases and
conditions. There is never a "good" time to be
seriously ill, but it is particularly traumatic
for children during the holidays. Some of the
donated toys are put in the hospital playroom and
recreation room providing enjoyment, while being
hospitalized, and throughout the year.
5
Food DriveYour food donations will feed many
San Diegans who are in desperate need through the
assistance of the San Diego Food Bank.
6
The San Diego Food Bank was established by the
Neighborhood House Association in 1977. Its
mission is to combat hunger in San Diego County
solicit, collect and distribute donated and
purchased food to those in need serve as an
advocate for the hungry and educate the public
about issues relating to hunger. The Food Bank
distributes nearly 11,000,000 pounds of food
annually - enough for more than 20,000 meals
every day of the year. The Holiday Food Drive
collects more than 35,000 pounds of food enough
for 30,000 families.Volunteers contribute more
than 30,000 hours annually to help the Food Bank
fulfill its mission.

Bob Gudgeon Memorial Fund
Who was the person and what is the fund...
Bob Gudgeon embodied many wonderful qualities
that we all hope for in a human being. As a UCSD
employee, Bob embodied the ideal conscientious
employee. He was loyal, dedicated, reliable, and
dependable and no job was too hard for Bob to
accomplish. When an off hours problem arose in
PPS, who would receive the call? You guessed it,
Bob. Bob was first to be called because he always
responded immediately never hesitating to help
his co-workers and he could be depended upon to
handle any situation efficiently.
13
His willingness to help his co-workers did not
stop at performing his job. His former
supervisor, Ann Green, told of many instances
where Bob would step in to help many fellow
employees in their time of need. Whether it was
emotional or monetary, Bob was there lending
support. A man of integrity and character, Bob
took pride in his work. As the person in charge
of Special Events, Bob spent many long hours
during the week, weekends, and holidays making
sure that every event was successful. He worked
for UCSD for 16 years, from 1980 to 1996, during
which time he received many commendations for his
stellar work. Prior to his UCSD career, he had
served the United States Navy for 20 years. He
left a standard that the Building service
currently strives to reach.
14
During his tenure at UCSD, he touched many other
individuals. He played Santa Claus for 13 years,
bringing joy to the UCSD Medical Center Pediatric
floor. He loved children and was happy to bring
them joy. Bob's efforts allowed these ill
children the opportunity to enjoy Christmas in
the hospital. Many of these children enjoyed
perhaps their last holiday, as many were
terminally ill. This clearly demonstrates Bob's
compassion for others. He also brought joy to the
UCSD Staff each year as Santa at the Annual UCSD
Staff Holiday Breakfast. Staff had the
opportunity to sit on Santa's lap and have their
picture taken. But his contributions did not stop
there.
15
He also gave of his time and money to many
community events and was the recipient of various
community awards. He also was "Admiral Bob-O",
the clown, in the Mother Goose Parade for the
last three years of his life. Despite all the
notoriety, Bob was a very humble man. Even after
his death, he brought sight for the first time to
two individuals through the donation of his
organs. The UCSD Staff wanted to honor this great
person. The best way to honor Bob was to give
birth to the Bob Gudgeon Memorial Fund. The staff
wanted to help continue Bob's efforts at the UCSD
Medical Center Pediatric floor.
16
Each year the money from the Bob Gudgeon Memorial
Fund, raised at the Annual UCSD Staff Association
Holiday Breakfast, has been used to buy gift
certificates. These gift certificates have been
used, by the UCSD Medical Center Pediatrics
staff, to purchase birthday gifts and crafts that
have continued to bring joy to the children in
the Pediatric floor of the UCSD Medical Center
throughout the year.
