Title: The Elements of Art

1
The Elements of Art
Introduction Lesson Quiz
2
Introduction
  • Subject The Elements of Art
  • Grade Level 9-12
  • Objectives To introduce students to the six
elements of art so that they may learn to create
more successful artworks and so that they may
evaluate others work in a more professional
    manner.
  • Directions Read presentation thoroughly so as to
pass the quiz at the end.

3
Elements of Art 1 Composition
  • How a piece of art is arranged. Composition can
create hierarchy, which highlights the most
important elements and forces less important
elements to recede. Compositions can be
  • Symmetrical or
  • Asymmetrical

4
Elements of Art 2 Line
  • Line is an essential part of any work of art, and
aids the viewers eye in moving up, down, across,
and through the composition. Different kinds of
line create different sensations and feelings.
    Line may be
  • Straight or curved
  • Thick or thin
  • Diagonal, horizontal, or vertical
  • Or any combination of these!

5
Elements of Art 3 Shape and Form
  • Shape and form differ from each other in that
shape is two-dimensional and form is
three-dimensional. Each may or may not be defined
by line, and create the basis of a composition.
    Shape and form may be
  • Organic or
  • Geometric and
  • May be repeated to
  • create a pattern

6
Elements of Art 4 Space
  • Many types of art depict three-dimensional
objects or scenes on a two-dimensional plane. The
successful illusion of space is essential to many
important works of art. Feelings of space can be
achieved by perspective, or by shading and
highlighting. Space in an artwork can be divided
    into
  • Positive space
  • the subject itself
  • Negative space
  • the space around the subject

7
Elements of Art 5 Color
  • Color is light reflected off of objects, and has
    three main characteristics
  • Hue the actual color itself. Red, yellow, blue,
    etc.
  • Value how light or dark a colour is.
  • Tints are colours white
  • Shades are colours black
  • Intensity how bright or dull a colour is.
  • Various colors, hues, values, and intensities can
create different feelings and meanings in a work
of art, and also are used as a device to move the
    viewers eye through a composition.

8
Elements of Art 6 Texture
  • Texture, like space, is often associated with
three-dimensional objects. In art, texture can
    be
  • Created in a two-dimensional work by careful
use of color, line, and shading
  • Actual physical texture
  • Surface texture the texture of a
    three-dimensional object
  • The texture of what is generally a
two-dimensional work, such as a painting, when
    unconventional materials are used.
