Audience Coverage
Audience coverage is even and uniform with MAD
arrays. Each speaker is directed at a particular
area of the audience. The back of the venue is
only covered by the topmost speakers. The front
rows of the audience are not subjected to higher
sound pressure levels since they are only
listening to the bottom-most speakers which are
aimed at them and driven at an appropriate level.

    pattern control is so focused that the usual

Output levels must be high near traditional
loudspeakers to compensate for signal dispersion
at the rear of the venue.

Output levels can be somewhat lower with line
array loudspeakers due to decreased signal
dispersion on the one axis.

Plane Source Systems
Output levels can be uniform with planar arrays
so the sound level in the front row and the back
row can be virtually identical.

Comparing Efficiency
For the same SPL at 320 meters, a Line Source
will require about 32 times less power (than a
point source), the Surface Array (MAD) will need
about 178 times less power while the ideal Plane
Source will need about 1000 times less power.
