Seventy Souls
  • Shemot 1 5 (JPCT) Now all those descended from
Yaakov were seventy souls, and Yosef, who was
    in Mitzrayim (Egypt).
  • Comment
  • Rabbi Schlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi) comments
  • and Joseph, who was in Egypt
  • Now were not he and his sons included in the
seventy? What then does this teach us? Did we not
know that he was in Egypt? But this clause
comes to inform you of Josephs righteousness.
He, the Joseph who tended his fathers flocks, is
the same Joseph who was in Egypt and became a
king, and he retained his righteousness. From
    Sifrei, Haazinu 334

10
Shmot 1 5 in Some Ancient Texts
  • (Targum Onkelos) seventy souls.
  • (Targum Yonatan) seventy souls.
  • (Peshitta Tanakh) seventy souls.
  • (Samaritan Pentateuch) .seventy souls
  • (LXX) And all the souls born of Jacob were
    seventy-five.

11
Was Stephen quoting the LXX?
  • Acts 714 (Greek, NASB) "Then Joseph sent word
and invited Jacob his father and all his
relatives to come to him, seventy-five persons in
    all.
  • Acts 7 14 (Peshitta) And Yosip sent and brought
his father Yaqub and all his family, and they
were in number seventy and five souls

12
Not Necessarily The Math
  • Yaaqovs children, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren who came to Mitzrayim (Egypt)
    66 (Bereshiyt 4626).
  • Adding Yaaqov himself, and Yosef with his two
sons 70. (or did it? See next slide)
  • If to the 66 we add the 9 wives of Yaaqovs sons
    (Yehudah's wife is dead -- Bereshiyt 38 12 and
Shimon's wife is ?) and not include Yosef, his
wife, and two sons (already there), and since
Yaaqov is specified separately (by Stephen), we
    have 75 persons.

Discussed Later
13
69, 70 or 71?
  • 32 vs 33 and 69 vs 70 (Bereshiyt 468-15)
  • Yochebed/Dinah/YHWH Himself
  • Bamidbar (Numbers) 2659 The name of Amram's
wife was Yochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was
born to Levi in Egypt and she bore to Amram
Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.

14
Can I Get Two Witnesses?
  • Can I get two witnesses --- in Hebrew for
    seventy-five souls?
  • (Dead Sea Scrolls) 4QExodb Seventy-five
    souls.
  • (Dead Sea Scrolls) 4QGen-Exodb Seventy-five
    souls.

15
Who Was Shimons Wife?A Review
  • Bereshiyt (Genesis) 4610 The sons of Simeon
Yemuel and Yamin and Ohad and Yachin and Zohar
and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

16
  • The Son of a Canaanite Woman

Who is the Canaanite Woman?
The Traditional (Rabbinic) Interpretation
Genesis 4610 (Chumash Bereishit) Simeons sons
were Yemuel, Yamin, Ohad, Tzochar, and Shaul, the
son of Dinah, who, since since had been raped by
Shechem, was known as the Canaanite woman.
(Bolding in original) (Chumash Bereishit, Chabad
of California/Kehot)
17
  • The Son of a Canaanite Woman

The literal meaning, according to the Artscroll
Commentary In the most literal sense, this
verse is tacit proof that, of all the brothers,
only Simeon married a woman of Canaanite descent.
The Torah therefore singles him out for taking a
Canaanite wife.
18
Who Were Shimons Wives?
  • Sefer HaYashar (Jasher) 45 2b and Simeon his
brother took his sister Dinah for a wife, and she
bare unto him Memuel, Yamin, Ohad, Jachin and
Zochar, five sons. 3 And he afterward came to
Bunah the Canaanitish woman, the same is Bunah
whom Simeon took captive from the city of
Shechem, and Bunah was before Dinah and attended
upon her, and Simeon came to her, and she bare
    unto him Saul.

19
They Were High Producers
  • Bereshiyt 1 7 (JPCT) The children of Israel were
fruitful and swarmed and increased and became
very very strong, and the land became filled with
    them.
  • Rashis comment
  • and swarmed They bore six children at each
    birth.

20
A New King
  • Exodus 18 (NASB) Now a new king arose over
Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
  • Exodus 18 (Targum Yonatan) And there arose a new
king (other) than he who was formerly over
Mizraim, who took no knowledge of Joseph, and
    walked not in his laws.

21
A New King
  • Exodus 18 (NASB) Now a new king arose over
Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
  • Who this new king or dynasty was is uncertain.
The Hyksos (foreign rulers or Josephus
shepherd kings) are likely candidates for the
    Pharoahs who knew Joseph.

22
A New King
  • Exodus 18 (NASB) Now a new king arose over
Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
  • The Hyksos were probably of multi-ethnic
    Canaanite/North Semitic origin.

The (Hyksos) are shown wearing the cloaks of
many colors associated with the mercenary Mitanni
bowmen and cavalry (ha ibrw) of Northern Canaan,
Aram, Kadesh, Sidon and Tyre. (Wikipedia)
An image representing the Egyptian pharaoh Ahmose
defeating the Hyksos in battle.
23
The Savior of Israel
  • Bereshiyt 1 10 (JPCT) Get ready, let us deal
shrewdly with them, lest they increase, and a war
befall us, and they join our enemies and depart
    from the land."
  • Rashis comment
  • let us deal shrewdly with them Our Rabbis,
however, interpreted that Pharaoh said, Let us
deal shrewdly with the Savior of Israel thus
    interpreting ??? as to him

24
The Savior of Israel
let us deal shrewdly with Him
To him/it 3d person Masculine Singular
To them 3d person Masculine Plural
25
The Hebrew Midwives
  • Bereshiyt 1 15 (JPCT) Now the king of Egypt
spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one who was named
Shifrah, and the second, who was named Puah.
  • Targum Yonatan Therefore did Pharaoh, king of
Mitzraim, give counsel to the Yehudith midwives,
the name of one of whom was Shifra, who is
Yokeved, and the name of the other Puvah, who is
    Miriam her daughter.

26
Yannes and YambresAnother Short Diversion
  • Exodus 115 (Targum Yonatan) Immediately
Yannes and Yambres, the chief of the magicians,
opened their mouth and answered Pharaoh, A
certain child is about to be born in the
congregation of Israel, by whose hand will be
destruction to all the land of Mitzraim.
Therefore did Pharoh, king of Mitzraim, give
    counsel to the Yehudith midwives....

27
How Shaul (Paul) heard about
  • 2 Timothy 38 (NASB) Just as Jannes and Jambres
opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the
truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard
    to the faith.
  • Sefer HaYashar (Jasher) 79 27 And when they had
gone Pharaoh sent for Balaam the magician and to
Yannes and Yambres his sons, and to all the
magicians and conjurors and counsellors which
belonged to the king, and they all came and sat
    before the king.

28
And Married a Daughter of Levi
  • Exodus 2 1 (JPCT) A man of the house of Levi
went and married a daughter of Levi.
  • Rashi Comments
  • She too was transformed to become like a young
woman physically, but she was actually 130
years old. For she was born when they came to
Egypt between the ??????? and they stayed there
210 years. When they left, Moses was 80 years
old. If so, when she conceived him, she was 130
years old, yet Scripture calls her a daughter
    of Levi. (Bamidbar 2659)
  • From Sotah 12a, Exod. Rabbah 119

29
And Married a Daughter of Levi
  • Shemot 2 2 (Artscroll) The woman conceived and
gave birth to a son. She saw that he was good and
she hid him for three months
  • Comments
  • He was good. As our sages teach us, this also
  • means that Moses was born circumcised, indicating
  • that his body contained no admixture of evil and
  • therefore did not distract him with material or
    unholy
  • sensual urges. He was thus fit for his holy
    calling
  • from birth. Chumash Bereishit/Kehot

Does this comment line up with the gospels?
30
She Could No Longer Hide HimMoshe was a premi?
  • Exodus 2 3 (JPCT) When she could no longer
hide him, she took for him a reed basket,
smeared it with clay and pitch, placed the child
into it, and put it into the marsh at the
    Nile's edge.
  • Rashi Comments
  • She bore him after only six months and one day
    (Sotah 12a).
  • Yashar 68 4a And at the end of seven months from
her conception she brought forth a son

31
Whom Did She See?
  • Exodus 2 6 (JPCT) She opened it, and she saw
him the child, and behold, he was a weeping lad,
and she had compassion on him, and she said,
"This is one of the children of the Hebrews."
  • Rashi Comments
  • Whom did she see? The child. Its midrashic
interpretation is that she saw the Shechinah with
him. From Sotah 12b, Exod. Rabbah 123

32
She Named Him Moshe
  • Exodus 2 10 The child grew up, and she brought
him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became like her
son. She named him Moshe, and she said, "For I
    drew him from the water."

33
The Names of MoshePart 1
  • Yashar 68 24 And at the end of two years, when
the child grew up, she brought him to the
daughter of Pharaoh, and he was unto her as a
son, and she called his name Moshe, for she said,
Because I drew him out of the water.
  • 25 And Amram his father called his name Chabar,
for he said, It was for him that he associated
with his wife whom he had turned away.

34
The Names of MoshePart 2
  • Yashar 68 26 And Yochebed his mother called his
name Yekuthiel, Because, she said, I have hoped
for him to the Almighty, and Elohim restored him
    unto me.
  • 27 And Miriam his sister called him Yered, for
she descended after him to the river to know what
    his end would be.

35
The Names of MoshePart 3
  • Yashar 68 28 And Aaron his brother called his
name Abi Zanuch, saying, My father left my mother
and returned to her on his account.
  • 29 And Kehath the father of Amram called his name
Abigdor, because on his account did Elohim repair
the breach of the house of Yaakov, that they
could no longer throw their male children into
    the water.

36
The Names of MoshePart 4
  • Yashar 68 30 And their nurse called him Abi
Socho, saying, In his tabernacle was he hidden
for three months, on account of the children of
    Ham.
  • 31 And all Israel called his name Shemaiah, son
of Nethanel, for they said, In his days has
Elohim heard their cries and rescued them from
    their oppressors.
  • Yah Hears, Son of Given of El

37
Moshe Killed the Egyptian
  • Exodus 211-12 (Targum Yonatan) 11 And in those
days when Mosheh was grown up, he went forth to
his brethren, and saw the anguish of their souls,
and the greatness of their toil. And he saw a
Mizraite man strike a Jewish man of his brethren
12 and Mosheh turned, and considered in the
wisdom of his mind, and understood that in no
generation would there arise a proselyte from
that Mizraite man, and that none of his
children's children would ever be converted and
he smote the Mizraite, and buried him in the
    sand.
  • Rashis Comment
  • striking a Hebrew man He Hebrew man was the
husband of Shelomith the daughter of Dibri ( Lev.
2410), and the Egyptian taskmaster laid his eyes
on her. So the Egyptian woke the Hebrew man at
night and took him out of his house, and the
taskmaster returned and entered the house and was
intimate with his wife while she thought that he
was her husband. The man returned home and became
aware of the matter. When that Egyptian saw that
he had become aware of the matter, he struck
him and drove him all day From Exod. Rabbah
    128

38
Which Hebrews were Fighting?
  • Exodus 2 13 (JPCT) He went out on the second
day, and behold, two Hebrew men were quarreling,
and he said to the wicked one, "Why are you going
    to strike your friend?"
  • Targum Yonatan And he went out the second day,
and looked and, behold, Dathan and Abiram, men
of the Yehudaee contended and seeing Dathan put
forth his hand against Abiram to smite him, he
said to him, Why do you smite your companion? And
Dathan said to him, Who has appointed you a chief
man and a judge over us? Will you kill me, he
said, as you did the Mitzarite? And Moshe was
    afraid.
  • Rashi Comments
  • two Hebrew men were quarreling Dathan and Abiram.
They were the ones who saved some of the manna
when they had been forbidden to leave it
overnight, as in Exod. 1619, 20. From Exod.
    Rabbah 129

39
Which Hebrews were Fighting?
  • Exodus 2 13 (Targum Yonatan) And he went out the
second day, and looked and, behold, Dathan and
Abiram, men of the Yehudaee contended and seeing
Dathan put forth his hand against Abiram to smite
him, he said to him, Why do you smite your
companion? And Dathan said to him, Who has
appointed you a chief man and a judge over us?
Will you kill me, he said, as you did the
    Mitzarite? And Moshe was afraid.

40
Getting Into Bigger Trouble
Bamidbar (Numbers) 269 (ISR) The sons of Eliab
Nemuel and Dathan and Abiram. These are the
Dathan and Abiram who were called by the
congregation, who contended against Moshe and
against Aaron in the company of Qorach (Korah),
when they contended against YHWH,
41
Getting Into Bigger Trouble
Devarim (Deuteronomy) (ISR) 11 6 - 7 and what
He did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab,
the son of Reuben, when the earth opened its
mouth and swallowed them, their households, their
tents, and every living thing that followed them,
among all Israel--
42
Sitting By a Well
Exodus 2 15 (JPCT) Pharaoh heard of this
incident, and he sought to slay Moses so Moses
fled from before Pharaoh. He stayed in the land
of Midian, and he sat down by a well. Rashi
Comments Moses sat there intentionally, for he
expected to meet his mate, just as Jacob had met
Rachel and Eliezer had met Rebecca when he sought
a mate for Isaac.
43
Moshe Stood Up Delivered
  • Exodus 217 19 (ISR) Then the shepherds came and
drove them away, but Moshe stood up and helped
them and watered their flock. So they said, "A
Mitzraite delivered us from the hand of the
shepherds, and what is more, he even drew the
water for us and watered the flock."
  • Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 117 Learn to do good Seek
justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan,
    Plead for the widow.

44
Elohim Remembered His Covenant
  • Shemot 223-24 (ISR) A long time after that, the
king of Mitzrayim died. The Israelites were
groaning under the bondage and cried out and
their cry for help from the bondage rose up to
Elohim. Elohim heard their cry, and Elohim
remembered His covenant with Avraham, with
    Yitzchak, and with Yaakov.

45
Elohim Remembered His Covenant
Exodus 223 (Targum Yonatan) And it was after
many of those days that the king of Mitzraim was
struck (with disease), and he commanded to kill
the firstborn of the sons of Israel, that he
might bathe himself in their blood. And the sons
of Israel groaned with the labor that was hard
upon them
46
  • The Name

Chapter 3 Artscroll Commentary The preponderant
Name of God in this chapter is Elohim, the Name
that connotes strict justice, because He was
about to judge Egypt for its excessive cruelty.
In the three places where He reveals Himself to
Moses (vs. 2,4, and 7), however, He is called
Hashem, the Name of mercy, to show that His
primary intention is to save Israel in a historic
demonstration of Divine mercy.
47
  • The Burning Bush

Shemot 32 (ISR) And the Messenger of ????
appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst
of a bush. And he looked and saw the bush burning
with fire, but the bush was not consumed.
What do you think of this Geneva Bible note to
this verse? This shows that the Church is not
consumed by the fires of affliction, because God
is in the midst of it.
48
  • Who Appeared to Moshe?

Exodus 32 (Targum Yonatan) And Zagnugael, the
angel of the Lord, appeared to him in a fame of
fire in the midst of the bush. And he gazed, and,
behold, the bush burned with fire, yet the bush
was neither burned nor consumed with fire.
Shemot Rabbah says it was Gabriel.
49
  • Who Appeared to Moshe?

English Bible commentator John Gill (1697-1771)
says that this angel/messenger was no other than
the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as appears
from Acts 732 and was the second person in the
Trinity, the Son of God, the angel of the divine
presence, and of the covenant, an uncreated
angel.
Compare his comment with the text of Acts
730-32. Is his comment consistent?
50
  • Who Appeared to Moshe?

Another view is that the Targum the midrash may
not be addressing is this remove your shoes
from your feet, for the place upon which you
stand is holy ground. What does this indicate?
The presence of the Shkhinah.
51
  • Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh

Shemot 313 And Mosheh said to Elohim, See, when
I come to the children of Yisrael and say to
them, The Elohim of your fathers has sent me to
you, and they say to me, What is His Name?
what shall I say to them?
Comment Although the Name YHWH was well known to
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Moshe had to ask.
52
  • Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh

Shemot 314 (ISR) And Elohim said to Mosheh, I
am that which I am. And He said, Thus you shall
say to the children of Yisrael, I am has sent
me to you.
(JPCT) God said to Moses, "Ehyeh asher ehyeh (I
will be what I will be)," and He said, "So shall
you say to the children of Israel, 'Ehyeh (I will
be) has sent me to you.'"
53
  • Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh

Shemot 315 (ISR) And Elohim said further to
Mosheh, Thus you are to say to the children of
Yisrael, ????  Elohim of your fathers, the
Elohim of Ab_raham, the Elohim of Yitsh?aq, and
the Elohim of Yaaqob_, has sent me to you. This
is My Name forever, and this is My remembrance to
all generations.
54
  • Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh

Shemot 315 (ISR) .This is My Name
forever. Rabbinic Commentary Since the vav
of (?????? ?) is missing, we are to understand it
as ????????, to conceal, meaning that the
pronunciation of the way Gods name is written
(?-?-?-?) is to be concealed.
55
  • On Leaving Egypt

Exodus 321-22 (NASB) 21 "I will grant this
people favor in the sight of the Egyptians and
it shall be that when you go, you will not go
empty-handed. 22 "But every woman shall ask of
her neighbor and the woman who lives in her
house, articles of silver and articles of gold,
and clothing and you will put them on your sons
and daughters. Thus you will plunder the
Egyptians."
Is this a picture of a time to come?
56
  • The Leprosy Connection

Shemot 46-7 (ISR) And ????  said to him again,
Now put your hand in your bosom. And he put his
hand in his bosom, and when he took it out, and
see, his hand was leprous, like snow. 7 And He
said, Put your hand in your bosom again. So he
put his hand in his bosom again, and drew it out
of his bosom, and see, it was restored like his
other flesh.
What is the connection between leprosy and
Messiah?
57
  • The Leprosy Connection

"The Messiah --what is his name?...The Rabbis
say, The Leper Scholar, as it is said, surely he
has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows yet
we did esteem him a leper, smitten of God and
afflicted...'" (Sanhedrin 98b)
58
  • The Leprosy Connection

Luke 722-23 (Peshitta) 22 And Yeshua answered
and said to them, "Go and tell Yochanon
everything that you have seen and heard, that the
blind see and the lame walk and the lepers are
cleansed and the deaf hear and the dead rise up
and the poor receive good news. 23 And blessed
is he who is not offended at me."
59
  • I Do Not Know YHWH

Shemot 51-3 (ISR) And afterwards Mosheh and
Aharon went in and said to Pharaoh, Thus said
????  Elohim of Yisrael, Let My people go, so
that they keep a festival to Me in the
wilderness. 2 And Pharaoh said, Who is ????,
that I should obey His voice to let Yisrael go?
I do not know ????, nor am I going to let
Yisrael go. 3 And they said, The Elohim of the
Heb_rews has met with us. Please, let us go three
days journey into the wilderness and slaughter
to ????  our Elohim, lest He fall upon us with
pestilence or with the sword.
60
  • Send My People Out!

Let My people go or send my people out? Shalach
appears here in the piel, or intensification,
verb form
What might this imply in our relationship with
future Pharoahs?
