9Seventy Souls
- Shemot 1 5 (JPCT) Now all those descended from
Yaakov were seventy souls, and Yosef, who was
in Mitzrayim (Egypt). - Comment
- Rabbi Schlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi) comments
- and Joseph, who was in Egypt
- Now were not he and his sons included in the
seventy? What then does this teach us? Did we not
know that he was in Egypt? But this clause
comes to inform you of Josephs righteousness.
He, the Joseph who tended his fathers flocks, is
the same Joseph who was in Egypt and became a

The literal meaning, according to the Artscroll
Commentary In the most literal sense, this
verse is tacit proof that, of all the brothers,
only Simeon married a woman of Canaanite descent.
The Torah therefore singles him out for taking a
Canaanite wife.

expected to meet his mate, just as Jacob had met
Rachel and Eliezer had met Rebecca when he sought
a mate for Isaac.
43Moshe Stood Up Delivered

46Chapter 3 Artscroll Commentary The preponderant
Name of God in this chapter is Elohim, the Name
that connotes strict justice, because He was
about to judge Egypt for its excessive cruelty.
In the three places where He reveals Himself to
Moses (vs. 2,4, and 7), however, He is called
Hashem, the Name of mercy, to show that His
primary intention is to save Israel in a historic
demonstration of Divine mercy.

appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst
of a bush. And he looked and saw the bush burning
with fire, but the bush was not consumed.
What do you think of this Geneva Bible note to
this verse? This shows that the Church is not
consumed by the fires of affliction, because God
is in the midst of it.
48Exodus 32 (Targum Yonatan) And Zagnugael, the
angel of the Lord, appeared to him in a fame of
fire in the midst of the bush. And he gazed, and,
behold, the bush burned with fire, yet the bush
was neither burned nor consumed with fire.
Shemot Rabbah says it was Gabriel.
49English Bible commentator John Gill (1697-1771)
says that this angel/messenger was no other than
the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as appears
from Acts 732 and was the second person in the
Trinity, the Son of God, the angel of the divine
presence, and of the covenant, an uncreated
angel.
Compare his comment with the text of Acts
730-32. Is his comment consistent?
50Another view is that the Targum the midrash may
not be addressing is this remove your shoes
from your feet, for the place upon which you

pronunciation of the way Gods name is written

55Exodus 321-22 (NASB) 21 "I will grant this
people favor in the sight of the Egyptians and
it shall be that when you go, you will not go
empty-handed. 22 "But every woman shall ask of
her neighbor and the woman who lives in her
house, articles of silver and articles of gold,
and clothing and you will put them on your sons
and daughters. Thus you will plunder the
Egyptians."
